Minx, Renegade Nell and three other period comedies that boast spunky characters and witty dialogue
1) Gentleman Jack (2019)
In the last few years, period comedies have become more open to inclusive stories which includes this show starring Suranne Jones as Miss Anne Lister. Like in My Lady Jane, the protagonist in Gentleman Jack is also based on a real person from history with the same name.
Anne Lister, a landowner and industrialist, used to keep diaries and the show is based on her writings. Plenty of research went into deciphering her entries as portions were written in secret code. The story brings forth the challenges she has to face after inheriting her uncle's estate which includes navigating a rather risky romance with another woman.
As far as bold characters in period comedies go, Anne is one who viewers will remember fondly for her gumption and sharp intellect. Aside from Jones' captivating performance, fans of period comedies will also appreciate the striking sets and costumes that complement the witty narrative. It has a total of two seasons and 16 episodes.
Where to watch: Gentleman Jack is available for streaming on HBO.
2) Minx (2022)
Starring Ophelia Lovibond and Jake Johnson, it takes viewers back to the 1970s. Lovibond plays Joyce Prigger who is determined to create a magazine that inspires women but finds no takers. The only person who sees her potential is Doug Renetti (Johnson), an adult entertainment publisher.
Together, they create the first erotic magazine specifically catered to women which brings in challenges as well as opportunities. The mature way the narrative explores a sensitive subject without making its audience uncomfortable is quite impressive. The perfectly-timed comedic rapport between Johnson and Lovibond also adds to the experience.
This show, containing two seasons and 18 episodes, offers a refreshing take on women's empowerment which is interesting to watch.
Where to watch: Minx can be streamed on Prime Video and Starz.
3) Renegade Nell (2024)
Fans of Derry Girls know Louisa Harland as Orla McCool, but in this period fantasy show, she plays Nell Jackson aka Nelly. After being framed for murder, Nelly finds herself on the run. She possesses extraordinary fighting abilities which makes her the most feared highwaywoman in the country. When she comes in contact with a magical sprite, she realizes that destiny has something big in store for her.
Not a lot of period comedies showcase action-heavy narratives but Renegade Nell is full of exciting fight scenes that viewers will enjoy. The supernatural elements do add to the intrigue but the real star of the show has to be Harland who is funny and charming enough to win over the audience and keep them invested in the story from beginning to end.
Where to watch: This eight-episode period comedy can be viewed on Disney+.
4) The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin (2024)
As expected from the descriptive title, this Apple TV+ period show is based on the English highwayman Dick Turpin but offers a fictionalized version of his adventures on the road. In the lead is Noel Fielding, who viewers may recognize from The IT Crowd wherein he plays IT executive turned recluse goth, Richmond Avenal.
Dick Turpin dreams of becoming England's greatest highwayman but he isn't exactly the most capable of the lot. But what he lacks in skills, he makes up for in charm and style. As he continues to engage in petty crimes, he becomes the target of a thief-taker named Jonathan Wilde portrayed by Hugh Bonneville and The Syndicate, a dangerous criminal organization.
Fielding finds ways to add his own flair to the role which really adds to the narrative. The intelligent screenplay overflowing with running gags and sarcasm is sure to win over the viewers. Containing only six episodes, it is the perfect choice for a weekend binge-watch.
Where to watch: The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin is available on Apple TV+.
5) Palm Royale (2024)
Many popular period comedies are adaptations. Palm Royale takes inspiration from Juliet McDaniel's Mr. & Mrs. American Pie. Kristen Wiig, who rose to fame during her time in SNL, plays the protagonist, Maxine Dellacorte-Simmons. Set in 1969, it follows Maxine's attempt to become a member of Palm Beach's most exclusive country club.
One of the reasons why cinephiles enjoy watching period comedies is for the striking costumes and sets, and Palm Royale doesn't disappoint. The eye-catching colors and glamour of the era are beautifully represented on screen.
It is also interesting to see the way the well-written screenplay takes a dig at the opulence and superficiality of high society. The first season contains 10 episodes. The show was recently renewed for a second season.
Where to watch: Palm Royale is available for streaming on Apple TV+.
These binge-worthy period comedies bring the best of endearing performances and humorous scripts that will surely please fans of the genre.
