Ryan Murphy's 10-episode horror drama series Grotesquerie for FX is filled with one heinous crime after another, unsettling a small community. Think of American Horror Story, but gorier, more gothic, more introspective, and with deep reflections on morality.

Six episodes in, Grotesquerie continues the intrigue with a seemingly never-ending search for a serial murderer whose crimes seem eerily intertwined with Niecy Nash-Betts' Detective Lois Tryon. Desperate for answers, she leans on the help of a nun-turned-journalist, Sister Megan. However, the more they unravel about the crimes and the killer, the more the lines between good and evil blur.

Audiences enjoy the show for everything from its mysterious dark tone to stellar performances and sometimes absurd lines from a strong cast led by Nash-Betts. The show's success is indicated by its 80% Rotten Tomatoes score, and it currently ranks #9 on Reelgood's Top 10 TV shows chart for the week of October 3 to 9.

For those who enjoyed Grotesquerie so far, below are five shows that can deliver a similar feel to Ryan Murphy's latest FX horror series.

This psychological horror drama series by horror veteran Mike Flanagan premiered in 2018 and is a must-watch for those who like Grotesquerie. Like the FX series, The Haunting of Hill House is gothic, with few but impactful jump scares. It also features creepy imagery that makes the show unsettling and terrifying.

The 10-episode miniseries follows the Crain family, especially the five Crain siblings, who lived in what would become the most famous haunted house in the country.

The show alternates between two timelines, showing the young Crain siblings living at Hill House and in the present day, where they are still haunted by their paranormal experiences.

2) Teacup

This new horror TV series, which Ian McCulloch created for television, premiered with a double-header on October 10, 2024, with the third episode coming on the 17th. But two episodes in, Teacup season 1 promises the same things Grotesquerie does—dark horror, mystery, and a dread-filled atmosphere that unfolds like a puzzle. The only difference is it has a blend of sci-fi.

Per the official logline, the story is about a group of neighbors trapped in a farm somewhere in rural Georgia. Strange and spooky things are happening around them, including a stranger in a homemade gas mask spray-painting a blue line along the ground. Now facing a mysterious but deadly threat, they have to unite to fight their common enemy.

3) Uzumaki

This new miniseries that premiered on September 28 might be adult animation, but it promises disturbing stories that are bloody and graphic, body horror, and a disturbing atmosphere. All these are horror series features that those who like Grotesquerie can appreciate. It also has a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score with three of four episodes in.

The horror anime focuses on two teenagers who began noticing dark and mysterious goings-on in their small town. Everything is turning into spirals, including the people's eyes, and their bodies also start twisting unnaturally like the town is cursed. To escape the spiraling curse, the classmates decide to flee, but escaping the town proves difficult.

4) The Watcher

Those who like Ryan Murphy's Grotesquerie will also like his The Watcher, another horror mystery thriller that premiered in 2022 and is currently in its second season.

Like the Niecy Nash-Betts-starrer, The Watcher has a lot of creepy and suspensefully terrifying factors. The only difference is that the horrifying tale it tells on TV is based on a real cold case.

It's about a family who thought that moving into their dream home would be the start of a happy ever after. However, a terrifying letter from a stalker signed "The Watcher" will threaten and torment their lives.

5) Midnight Mass

This is another miniseries from Mike Flanagan, and like his other horror features, this 7-episode miniseries that premiered in 2021 promises suspense, mystery, and horror. It's a slow burn like Grotesquerie, but as the plot unfolds, it can pull the rug from under the viewer's feet with the amount of gore and dark undertones.

Per the official logline, an isolated island community starts to experience profound changes after a charismatic but mysterious young priest arrives. But besides miraculous events, frightening omens also start to unsettle their neighborhood.
