The Nurse, A Friend of the Family, and other TV shows to watch after Under the Bridge
1) Mare of Easttown (2021)
Mare of Easttown, HBO's crime drama series was directed by Craig Zobel and created/written by Brad Ingelsby. It centers around the investigation of a teenage single mother Erin McMenamin's death in the suburb of Easttown, Pennsylvania.
Detective Mare Sheehan (Kate Winslet) leads the investigation even as her personal life is in shambles. She is grieving her son Kevin's death from suicide while also fighting a custody battle over her 4-year-old grandson with Kevin's drug-addicted girlfriend, Carrie. Her quest leads her to uncover lies, betrayals, and deceit that plague Easttown.
The award-winning series features Jean Smart, David Denman, Angourie Rice, Evan Peters, Guy Pearce, Sosie Bacon, Julianne Nicholson, Neal Huff, and more in supporting roles. The premise of Mare of Easttown is similar to Under the Bridge, wherein a female police officer investigates a crime in her community.
2) When They See Us (2019)
Ava DuVernay created, co-wrote, and directed the 4-part drama series that chronicles the r*pe and fatal attack on Trisha Meili. This later came to be known as the 1989 Central Park jogger case. The Washington Post reported that the police falsely convicted five young Black and Latino boys (known as the Central Park Five) of the crime without sufficient evidence, leading them to serve prison sentences between seven to thirteen years.
The miniseries explores the aftermath of their false convictions and eventual exoneration in December 2002. Its ensemble cast includes Michael K. Williams, Jharrel Jerome, John Leguizamo, Asante Blackk, and Jovan Adepo, among others.
The Netflix series When They See Us is a chilling reminder of the limitations of police investigations and the judicial system, similar to the theme in Under the Bridge.
3) A Friend of the Family (2022)
A Friend of the Family centers around Jan Broberg's horrific experience of being groomed and assaulted as a young girl in the 1970s. The Independent reported that she was allegedly se*ually abused and kidnapped twice by a trustworthy family friend, Robert Berchtold. Spread over nine episodes, the series stars the likes of Jake Lacy, Colin Hanks, Hendrix Yancey, Mckenna Grace, Anna Paquin, and Lio Tipton.
Creator Nick Antosca was inspired to tell the story after reading Stolen Innocence: The Jan Broberg Story and watching the crime documentary Abducted in Plain Sight, based on Broberg's kidnappings.
A Friend of the Family and Under the Bridge deal with crimes committed within the victim's community/family. Both shows have an insight into the complex and multidimensional relationships between the victim and the criminal.
4) The Girl from Plainville (2022)
The Girl from Plainville is a biographical crime drama set in Massachusetts by creators Liz Hannah and Patrick Macmanus.
The series covers the events leading to Conrad Roy's suicide in 2014 and his girlfriend Michelle Carter's involvement in his demise. As reported by A&E, Roy died from carbon monoxide poisoning after Michelle helped him plan his suicide and encouraged him to carry it through. However, Carter was subsequently convicted of involuntary manslaughter in 2017.
The series features Elle Fanning, Chloë Sevigny, and Colton Ryan in the lead roles. The heartbreaking story of The Girl from Plainville showcases the extreme behaviors among teenagers. It sparks a discussion about their mental health issues in the same way that Under the Bridge does.
5) The Nurse (2023)
The Nurse is a Danish thriller by director Kasper Barfoed. It follows the true story of a nurse who deliberately killed multiple patients in the 2010s while working at the Nykobing Falster Hospital.
The tale is told through the lens of Pernille Kurzmann (Fanny Louise Bernth), a young nurse at the hospital who befriends the older, experienced emergency room nurse Christina Hansen (Josephine Park). To her utter shock, she discovers that Hansen has been killing her patients by injecting them with a lethal dose of morphine and diazepam.
The series is based on Kristian Corfixen's book, The Nurse: The True Story Behind One Of Scandinavia's Most Notorious Criminal Trials, published in 2022. Like Under the Bridge, this series also weaves a suspenseful story with an unlikely killer whose motives remain dubious.
Under the Bridge is available to stream on Hulu.
