Stranger Things is undoubtedly one of the biggest original series from Netflix. The show started in 2016 with an eight-episode season and has till date released four seasons on the OTT platform, with a final season currently under development. Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos has recently announced that Stranger Things season 5 will release in 2025.
Stranger Things was created by the Duffer brothers, Matt and Ross. The science fiction drama series could not find a production house initially, as many thought that children as protagonists were not a great idea. However, the success the show is now well known.
Stranger Things features an ensemble cast including the likes of David Harbour, Winona Ryder, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, and others in pivotal roles. It has been one of the most successful titles on Netflix, receiving widespread acclaim and numerous accolades.
While the series has received praise for its writing, directing, and the 80s vibe around it, the performances by the actors have also been a highlight. It is not very far-fetched to say that it was the actors and their characters who made it possible for Stranger Things to attain its cult status.
But with just the final season remaining, the plot has reached its boiling point and is now approaching its conclusion. With that in mind, we will guesstimate some of the characters who might die in the final season of Stranger Things.
5 major characters who might die in Stranger Things season 5
1) Vecna
The one character who is definitely getting everyone's vote for the one who should die is the big bad of the series, Vecna, the creator of the Upside Down.
Originally born as Henry Creel in Nevada in 1947, he had gotten his powers after disappearing into an alternate dimension. He later moved to Hawkins at the age of 12 and eventually joined under Dr. Brenner in the Hawkins National Laboratory. His powers were the source of the experiments under Project MKUltra that took place at the Hawkins Lab and gave Eleven her psychokinetic powers.
The plot of Stranger Things has gradually moved towards the climactic showdown between Vecna, Creel's Upside Down existence, and Eleven. If we consider what the Duffer brothers have talked about the upcoming season, Vecna will probably kick the bucket to give us a satisfying conclusion.
2) Will Byers (Noah Schnapp)
Another character who faces the likelihood of dying in the fifth season is Noah Schnapp's Will Byers. It was Will's disappearance in the first season that set into motion the events of Stranger Things. He got kidnapped by the Demogorgon and trapped in the Upside Down, consecutively becoming the Mind Flayer's connection to the real world.
Throughout the series run, he has gone through a lot of hardships and become a crucial part of the Hawkins team fighting against the forces of the Upside Down. However, in the decisive battle, Will might choose to sacrifice himself to close the connection between the dimensions to save his friends, family, and the world.
3) Jim Hopper (David Harbour)
On our list of Stranger Things characters likely to die in the upcoming season, the next big name is David Harbour's Jim Hopper. The Hawkins chief of police went through a roller coaster of character evolution, from being an alcoholic chainsmoking cop to becoming a selfless protective father figure to Eleven.
Ironically, Hopper has already been on the verge of death towards the end of the third season during The Battle of Starcourt. Initially speculated to have died during the showdown, he was caught and imprisoned by the Russians in Kamchatka.
The final season will definitely see the return of Jim Hopper to Hawkins as he joins the fight against the forces of the Upside Down. However, there is a possibility that he might sacrifice his life to save the ones he loves, like Eleven, Joyce, and others.
4) Steve Harrington (Joe Keery)
Played by Joe Keery, Steve Harrington has been a prominent character throughout the series run. Introduced as the high school jock boyfriend of Nancy Wheeler, he grew to have a personality of his own. Initially portrayed to be an arrogant, self-absorbed brat, Steve gradually becomes a dependable and loved character, joining the fight against Vecna and his troops.
Considering his fate in the upcoming final season, Steve seems to be in a tricky situation. While he was never meant to be one of the central characters driving the plot, he has become a fan favorite character and a poignant part of Hawkins' force against the Upside Down.
The Duffer brothers have also pointed out that Steve will have a pivotal role to play in the upcoming season and the climactic showdown. This might mean putting his own life on the line to keep his friends away from harm.
5) Eleven
Portrayed by Millie Bobby Brown, Eleven is the closest thing to a protagonist that Stranger Things has. Considering what the Duffer brothers have said about not making the tone for Stranger Things unnecessarily dark and killing off fan favorites, we can expect Eleven to either stay alive or go for a fake death.
However, it could also be possible for the creators to bring the story full circle at the end of the fifth season. This could potentially mean the death of Eleven and the complete return of Will Byers to Hawkins, bringing back the original state of equilibrium in Hawkins.
These are some of the characters that we think are staring death in the face in Stranger Things' upcoming final season. With the fifth season arriving in 2025, fans have enough time to revisit the series and make their own assumptions on who might be killed off in the final season.
