Season 1 of the drama series Tell Me Lies was released on Hulu on September 7, 2022. It drew praise from viewers and critics alike for its depiction of a complex relationship between a couple, over the course of eight years.
The official synopsis of the show reads:
"Tell Me Lies follows a tumultuous but intoxicating relationship as it unfolds over the course of 8 years. When Lucy Albright (Grace Van Patten) and Stephen DeMarco (Jackson White) meet at college, they are at that formative age when seemingly mundane choices lead the way to irrevocable consequences."
Tell Me Lies, through repeated back-and-forth jumps in time, shows how certain decisions can make or break a relationship. The synopsis further clarifies:
"Although their relationship begins like any typical campus romance, they quickly fall into an addictive entanglement that will permanently alter not only their lives, but the lives of everyone around them."
The college-romance of the two protagonists soon turns sour and leaves both the characters exhausted. The show has been created by Meaghan Oppenheimer and is based on the 2018 novel of the same name by Carola Lovering. Season 2 of Tell Me Lies was confirmed in November 2022.
Fans of the first season will be happy to know that filming for Tell Me Lies season 2 began on January 17, 2024. While no official date of release is available yet, late-2024 or early-2025 can possibly see the release of the second season. 5 TV shows like Tell Me Lies
1) You (2018-present)
This psychological thriller series had originally premiered on Lifetime in 2018, but later moved to Netflix. The series is based on the books by Caroline Kepnes, and was developed by Greg Berlanti and Sera Gamble, in association Warner Bros. Television.
Like Tell Me Lies, You is also a story about unhealthy relationships. It follows Joe Goldberg, an obsessive and violent man, who could go to any length for the love of the person he is currently infatuated with. Golberg's methods include using social media to stalk the person he is interested in, following their daily interactions with others and going as far as using violence to remove other 'competitors' from the equation.
The synopsis of the show reads:
"A dangerously charming, intensely obsessive young man goes to extreme measures to insert himself into the lives of those he is transfixed by."
In season 1, Goldberg starts as a bookstore manager in New York. Over the seasons, he changes professions and his identities multiple times. The fifth and last season of the show will return to Netflix soon.
2) Normal People (2020)
This 12-episode miniseries is based on Sally Rooney's novel of the same name and is available for streaming on BBC Three in the UK and Hulu in the US. The synopsis of the show reads:
"Marianne and Connell weave in and out of each other’s lives in this exploration of sex, power and the desire to love and be loved. Adaptation of Sally Rooney’s best-selling novel."
Like Tell Me Lies, Normal People explores the complexities of relationships and here too, the romance occurs during the characters' student-days. Connell is popular in school, while Marianne is reserved and considered odd. While she gets bullied by others, Connell remains silent.
The relationship between the two is filled with tension and complexities that do not go away even when they both go to Trinity College Dublin. Like in Tell Me Lies, seemingly small decisions have far-reaching consequences in this show as well.
3) The Affair (2014-2019)
This Showtime series ran for five seasons and portrays an extra-marital affair between novelist Noah (Dominic West) and a waitress named Alison (Ruth Wilson). The series explores the effects of the affair on not just these two characters but also on those around them.
The synopsis of the show reads:
"A struggling novelist and a young waitress strike up an extramarital relationship that promises to forever change the course of their lives."
The depiction of lies, secrets, memory bias, and differing perspectives in a relationship, makes The Affair quite similar to Tell Me Lies. As Both Noah and Alison begin seeking romantic pleasures beyond their respective spouses, what starts off as a pleasant experience, turns into a horrible one as the story progresses.
4) Behind Her Eyes (2021)
The 6-episode British series, Behind Her Eyes, blends several genres together: it mixes noir with the supernatural, while exploring romance, obsession and infidelity, much like it is explored in thrillers.
Based on the 2017 novel of the same name by Sarah Pinborough, this Netflix series premiered on 17 February 2021. Its synopsis reads:
"A single mother enters a world of twisted mind games when she begins an affair with her psychiatrist boss while secretly befriending his mysterious wife."
Like Tell Me Lies, Behind Her Eyes is a brooding exploration of tumultuous love. Louise (Simona Brown), a single mother, begins an affair with her boss Dr. David Ferguson (Tom Bateman). Things take a strange turn when she develops an enigmatic bond with the boss' wife, Adele (Eve Hewson), as well.
Behind Her Eyes is packed with twists and while it may differ from Tell Me Lies in that it also contains an element of the supernatural, it still follows a complicated relationship, like the latter.
5) Euphoria (2019-present)
HBO's teen drama series Euphoria became an instant hit with the audience and the critics, when its first season was released in 2019. Like Tell Me Lies, it explores romance, betrayal, toxicity, infidelity, and violence in relationships.
Its synopsis reads:
"Euphoria follows a group of high school students as they navigate love and friendships in a world of drugs, sex, trauma and social media."
The show mainly focuses on Ruby "Rue" Bennett (Zendaya), a drug addict who has just returned to high school after rehab, and is struggling to find a stable relationship. She has a momentary romantic affair with Jules, but sustaining the relationship becomes difficult as Rue continues to struggle with her drug addiction.
Apart from Rue, the series also focuses on other high school characters who are similarly looking for healthy relationships. Lies, secrets, deception, infidelity make up the crux of the drama, and like Tell Me Lies, Euphoria shows how love and romance can be extremely complicated for teenagers. Season 3 of Euphoria is expected to return sometime soon.
