6 moments that perfectly capture the chaos and dark humor that fans associate with The Umbrella Academy
1) The Funeral Scene: Season 1, Episode 1
One of the reasons why The Umbrella Academy made a lasting impression on viewers is because it set the tone right from the start. In this episode, the Hargreeves siblings come back to their childhood home to pay last respects to their adoptive father, who reportedly died of heart failure.
However, it becomes apparent soon enough that the siblings aren't exactly on the best of terms, as they make little effort to disguise their displeasure over the entire situation.
Fans will particularly remember the funeral scene, wherein Luther, played by Tom Hopper, pours out their father’s ashes. Instead of dispersing with the wind, it ends up as an unsightly lump on the ground because of the pouring rain. Even though this scene was anticlimactic, it helped establish The Umbrella Academy's ingrained dark humor that fans have come to enjoy and adore over time.
2) Griddy's Doughnuts Scene: Season 1, Episode 1
While it is true that each of the Hargreeves siblings comes with their fair share of emotional baggage, it cannot be denied that they are still quite intimidating as opponents. Now, out of the six, Five, portrayed by Aidan Gallagher, may look like the weakest link due to his 13-year-old body but he sets the record straight in this iconic fight scene that made fans do a double-take.
The ability to jump through space and time is not new to viewers but the way Five used his ability to take out several heavily armed men without even breaking into a sweat was nothing short of impressive. In fact, this scene set a high bar for Five's succeeding fights in The Umbrella Academy, and much to the delight of fans, the beloved character has come through every time.
3) Klaus versus Ben: Season 2, Episode 1
Robert Sheehan's character, Klaus, is pretty much a magnet for trouble and his addiction certainly doesn't help his cause. Even though he isn't particularly fond of his ability to communicate with the dead, it does have its upside, which involves being able to communicate with Ben (Justin H. Min), the Umbrella Academy's deceased member.
Even though Klaus is mostly dismissive of Ben's practical approach and level-headedness, he does find solace in having Ben around. Very rarely does their constant bickering culminate into anything more than a loop of chides and sarcastic remarks. But in season two, when the two started going at each other by the side of the road, it was a sight to behold.
During this scene, they weren't superheroes but two disgruntled brothers who couldn't let each other win. The cherry on top is the stranger who drives past with a confused look as he can only see Klaus writhing on the ground by himself.
4) Number Five versus The Commission Board: Season 2, Episode 7
Five's relationship with The Commission is complicated, to say the least. Once a part of the agency, he ended up betraying them by alerting his family about the apocalypse. And when he made up his mind to stop the impending destruction, Five became a target for Commission agents seeking to eliminate him before he gets a chance to mess up the timeline.
In season two, when Five casually disrupts a Commission Board meeting with an axe in hand, fans were certain that the fight would match the intensity of the Griddy's Doughnuts scene and it certainly didn't disappoint. His connection to the Commission is further explored in season three wherein it is revealed that Five was the one who founded The Commission in the first place.
5) Footloose Dance-Off: Season 3, Episode 1
Music plays a crucial role in The Umbrella Academy's narrative and fans have seen the Hargreeves siblings bust out dance moves often. But in season 3, the fans were treated to an iconic dance-off between the members of The Umbrella Academy and The Sparrow Academy that was both shocking and entertaining.
The Umbrella Academy has always delivered in terms of unexpected moments and this random line dance battle to "Footloose" is one great example. Even though this battle only happened in Diego's (David Castañeda) mind thanks to the hallucinogenic venom from Cazzie David's character, Jayme, it is still a memorable scene that will live rent-free in the minds of countless fans for a long time to come.
6) Viktor's Transition: Season 3, Episode 2
Even though the Hargreeves siblings are constantly at each other's throats, it is also true that deep down, they do care for one another. Throughout the three seasons, there have been many heartfelt moments wherein they have come to each other's aid in times of need. They might not be the most expressive siblings on TV but they still find a way to get through to one another.
One moment in particular that throws light on their sibling love is when Vanya comes out as a trans man and assumes the name Viktor. Although Umbrella Number Seven is unsure about the reactions he will receive from his siblings, all of them are quick to acknowledge and celebrate the change. It also holds special significance as it coincides with Elliot Page's real-life coming out.
Fans will have a hard time saying goodbye to The Umbrella Academy this August but they will always have memorable moments from the show to look back upon.
