Based on a novel of the same name by Thomas Perry, The Old Man is a thriller show featuring Jeff Bridges, John Lithgow, and others. The series follows Dan Chase (Bridges), a former CIA operative and army veteran, living in hiding after fleeing from the agency.
When an assassin tries to break into his house, he is forced to return to his old life. He teams up with Zoe McDonald (Amy Brenneman) to find out who is trying to kill him, while FBI assistant director Harold Harper (Lithgow) hunts him down.
The Old Man has been praised for its pace, story, and the performances by the two veterans. As the show comes back for a second season on September 12, 2024, here’s a list of six other shows to watch in the meantime.
Condor, Instinct, and other shows to watch after The Old Man
1) The Blacklist - Amazon Prime Video
A popular crime drama starring James Spader, The Blacklist follows Raymond Reddington (Spader), a former US Naval officer on the FBI’s most-wanted list. He turns himself in on the condition that he will help the agency hunt down other criminals, teaming up with rookie agent Elizabeth Keen (Megan Boone).
Like The Old Man, the show is about a former government official who is now disgraced and wanted. The partnership between Reddington and Keen is similar to Chase and Zoe. The show has won a number of awards, being praised for its acting and story.
2) Quarry - Amazon Prime Video
Set in 1972, Quarry, is a neo-noir crime drama that revolves around Mac Conway (Logan Marshall-Green), a marine who returns to his home in Memphis after participating in the Vietnam war. Ostracized by his family and society, his dead-end life is renewed when a mysterious man known as The Broker, offers him to become a deadly hitman.
He is soon drawn into the world of killing and corruption. Like The Old Man, the series features a protagonist whose name is sullied. Both the shows have similar themes of conspiracies and back-stabbings. And they have the same premise of a single man fighting against the establishment.
3) Condor - Amazon Prime Video
Based on a novel by James Grady and its film adaptation, Condor, is a crime thriller that stars Max Irons, Brenden Fraser, and others. The show is about a CIA analyst Joe Turner (Irons), who stumbles upon a massive conspiracy when all his co-workers are killed.
Turner now must stay on the run, clear his name, and find out the truth about the murders of his colleagues. Fast-paced like The Old Man, the show makes for a great post-watch as it also deals with a protagonist from the CIA on the run like Dan Chase. And has the same themes as conspiracies and bureaucratic politics.
4) The Enemy Within - Amazon Prime Video
Starring Jennifer Carpenter, The Enemy Within, is a thriller that revolves around Erica Shepherd, the CIA Deputy Director of Operations. When a Russian terrorist threatens her daughter, she is forced to betray her fellow agents, who are killed. Jailed for life, she gets a chance to prove herself when the terrorist strikes again and FBI agent Will Keaton (Morris Chestnut) is forced to bring back Erica and help them.
Viewers who enjoyed the redemption story and themes of untrustworthy intelligence institutions in The Old Man, can watch The Enemy Within for a female-centric viewpoint. Also, just like Erica protects her daughter, so does Dan protect Zoe.
5) Instinct - Amazon Prime Video
Based on a novel by James Patterson, Instinct is a police procedural featuring former CIA officer Dr. Dylan Reinhart (Alan Cumming), now an author and professor. He’s called back into action by NYPD detective Elizabeth Needham (Bojana Novakovic) to catch a serial killer using his books as inspiration.
Like Chase and Zoe in The Old Man, Reinhart and Needham become partners working to stop a dangerous threat.
6) Person of Interest - Amazon Prime Video
A science fiction crime drama, Person of Interest, stars Jim Caviezel, Michael Emerson, and others. The series revolves around a former CIA operative John Reese (Jim), who is approached by a computer genius, Harold Finch (Michael), who has created a highly advanced software for the US government.
The software has the ability to predict future terrorist attacks and the duo attempt to understand the threats given by the machine and try to stop the crime beforehand. The acclaimed series is similar to The Old Man as Dan Chase and John Reese, are both former CIA operatives, living off the grid, who now have to come back into action.
Viewers who enjoyed the nuanced and engrossing cat-and-mouse chase of The Old Man, can go through this list and choose a similar show of their liking.
