7 series to watch before The Rig season 2 releases

Starring Iain Glen, Emily Hampshire, and others, The Rig is a British supernatural thriller. Created by David Macpherson and directed by John Strickland, the story revolves around a Scottish oil rig in North Sea, where crew members are about to go home but suddenly face a mysterious fog all around them.

Cut off from all other communications, the crew is stuck on the rig and begins to experience personality changes when the mist is found with spores. Soon, the crew members realize that an alien creature has latched onto the mist from the ocean floor.

Starring Billy Campbell, Matt Long, and others, Helix is a sci-fi horror drama about a team of scientists that belong to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). They decided to explore the Arctic region so that they could investigate the potential outbreak of a disease.

However, their research takes a deadly turn when they are overcome by supernatural creatures resembling zombies and must survive dangerous threats to save mankind.

Like The Rig, the show’s premise is about a group of people unraveling a paranormal mystery and has the theme of survival.

2) 1899 - Netflix

Created by Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, who also created the acclaimed series Dark, the show 1899 is only one season long. It is a sci-fi mystery set in the titular year and begins with a group of emigrants traveling aboard a steamship from Southampton, UK, to New York City.

Excited by the chance to live a new life, their dreams are cut short when they encounter a lost ship, Prometheus, which disappeared some time back on the same route. The show is dark, and the travelers are faced with dangerous threats.

Like The Rig, the show has a similar theme of people tackling supernatural phenomena.

3) The Strain - Disney+

Based on a novel trilogy by Chuck Hogan and Guillermo del Toro, The Strain is a horror drama created by the author duo. Starring Corey Stoll, David Bradley, Sean Astin, and others, it is about a new Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) program titled Canary, whose head is Dr Ephraim Goodweather.

The doctor is asked to investigate a plane which has landed but where all the passengers are dead. Soon, he realizes that there is a viral outbreak that turns humans into vampires, and he must work with his team to stop the danger to humanity while also discovering political corruption.

Like The Rig, the show has themes of survival and supernatural forces.

4) The Mist - Netflix

Based on a novella by Stephen King, The Mist is a horror thriller created by Christian Torpe and starring Morgan Spector, Alyssa Sutherland, and others.

The series is set in a small town in Maine, where a group of people are stuck in a supermarket when a mysterious mist envelops them, and anyone who goes outside is killed brutally by unknown forces. With only one season, the show is a quick and thrilling watch with lots of twists and turns.

Like The Rig, the show has a similar premise of a group of people being stuck by a deadly and mysterious mist and has similar themes of survival and community.

5) Nightflyers - Netflix

Based on a novella and short story by George R.R. Martin, Nightflyers is a sci-fi horror series starring Eoin Macken, David Ajala, and others. The show is set in 2093, and a group of scientists travel in space to make contact with aliens aboard a ship called the Nightflyer.

Once their journey begins, they face mysterious events onboard, making the crew question each other. However, they soon realize a dangerous creature is on the ship with them and that they must save themselves.

Like The Rig, the show is about a group of people facing unnatural forces and fighting for safety.

6) From - Amazon Prime Video

Starring Catalina Sandino Moreno, Harold Perrineau, and others, From is a sci-fi horror series by John Griffin. The show has gained popularity for its story, performances, and direction. The series begins with a family getting lost and entering an unknown town, from which they are unable to escape.

The series branches into a wide set of mysteries, where everything is connected, and the residents must stay inside their homes before dawn, or else they will be killed by hellish entities that only come at night.

Like The Rig, the show has themes of survival and community and revolves around the fight against supernatural forces.

7) All of Us Are Dead - Netflix

All of Us are Dead is a South Korean drama based on a Naver webtoon, Now at Our School, written by Joo Dong-geun. The zombie horror series was created by Chun Sung-il, Lee Jae-kyoo, and Kim Nam-su. The show is about a group of high school students in the fictional city of Hyosan, where an experiment goes wrong and creates a horde of zombies.

The school is divided between the zombies and the trapped students as they struggle to survive without outside communication, food, and water. The show's landscape features zombies overruning the city, and the authorities are busy tackling them as the students have to fight for themselves.

Like The Rig, the show plays on themes of survival amidst supernatural danger and the importance of banding together.
