It is impressive that Only Murders in the Building is able to infuse a crime-fuelled narrative with perfectly timed comedic moments. Bored to Death, created by author Jonathan Ames, boasts a similar storytelling style.

Jason Schwartzman plays a fictionalized version of Jonathan Ames, a writer in New York City who pretends to be a private detective and stumbles his way through various cases that come his way. He has some help from his best friend, Ray Hueston (Zach Galifianakis), along with his boss and mentor, George Christopher (Ted Danson).

Like Only Murders in the Building, this show also captures the highs and lows of life in New York City. Bored to Death gets many things right, such as the well-developed characters, witty humor, and great chemistry between the leads, making it extremely bingeable.

Where to watch: Bored to Death, containing three seasons and 24 episodes, can be streamed on Max and Prime Video.

2) Search Party (2016)

In Only Murders in the Building, Charles, Oliver, and Mabel only take on the role of detectives after someone is murdered in their apartment building. Likewise, the central characters in Search Party are far from professional detectives.

When Dory, played by Alia Shawkat, becomes obsessed with finding her college acquaintance, Chantal Witherbottom, who has gone missing, her friends decide to help her in whatever capacity they can. They all have minimal sleuthing experience, which unsurprisingly leads to countless awkward and hilarious moments.

The friendship dynamic between the well-written lead characters makes it relatable. It is a slow burn at first, but the narrative picks up pace over time and keeps viewers engaged with many unexpected twists and turns. It has a total of five seasons and 50 episodes.

Where to watch: This dark comedy series is available to stream on Max, Prime Video, and Apple TV+.

3) Queens of Mystery (2019)

Charles, Oliver, and Mabel from Only Murders in the Building believe they know everything about solving crime because they have enough experience with true-crime podcasts. In Queens of Mystery, Olivia Vinall plays a young detective who has trouble keeping her three crime-writing aunts away from the crime scenes she is assigned to investigate.

Like the trio from Only Murders in the Building, Cat, Beth, and Jane feel that their vast knowledge of whodunit murders can help find the culprit. Similar to Only Murders in the Building, this show also thrives on endearing characters and intelligent dialogue. Agatha Christie fans, in particular, will enjoy the show because of its cozy mystery vibe.

Where to watch: Queens of Mystery has two seasons and 12 episodes and can be viewed on Prime Video and Plex.

4) The Afterparty (2022)

The thing that fans love about Only Murders in the Building is that it doesn't only focus on the murder but also on the lead characters and their backstories. The Afterparty just takes it one step higher. A high school reunion becomes the scene of a murder, and each episode presents a different character's perspective of the night it happened.

The Afterparty's engaging format allows viewers to dive deep into the lives of the various characters. Also, because the narrative keeps changing with each interview, it is hard for the viewer to identify the lies from the truths, which means the suspense is maintained until the end.

It has two seasons and 18 episodes. Every season opens up to a new case but follows the same storytelling format.

Where to watch: The Afterparty is available to stream on Apple TV+.

5) Based on a True Story (2023)

If any character can match Charles, Oliver, and Mabel's obsession with true crime podcasts, it is Kaley Cuoco's Ava Bartlett in this comedy thriller.

Ava has a baby on the way and is married to Nathan (Chris Messina), a former tennis player who had to shift career gears and become a coach after an injury. When Ava becomes certain that she has correctly identified a local serial killer, she decides against telling the police. Instead, she starts a podcast to make money off America's obsession with true crime.

Like Only Murders in the Building, the crime podcast is central to this show's narrative. The show has its comic moments, but at the same time, it explores disturbing truths about modern society, where people are ready to exploit each other for their benefit. Season one has eight episodes, and the show's second season is scheduled to premiere on November 21, 2024.

Where to watch: Based on a True Story can be viewed on Peacock.

6) A Murder at the End of the World (2023)

With only seven episodes, this series is darker than Only Murders in the Building but has the same suspense and tension that fans adore. Emma Corrin stars as an amateur detective, Darby Hart, who is invited, along with eight other guests, to an isolated Arctic retreat. When one of the guests ends up dead, she has to put her skills to use and catch the culprit before anyone else is murdered.

The narrative is centered around technology, and it is interesting to see high-tech sleuthing methods in action. Corrin does a great job of portraying Darby's complex character. Darby's relentless search for the truth sets the pace for the well-written narrative. It also has plenty of clever red herrings that will keep viewers guessing.

Where to watch: A Murder at the End of the World is available on Hulu and Disney+.

7) Poker Face (2023)

Viewers can't get enough of Only Murders in the Building because there is always something sinister happening within the walls of the Arconia. Similarly, the lead character of Poker Face, Charlie Cale, portrayed by Natasha Lyonne, is a magnet for trouble. Charlie, a casino worker, has the ability to spot lies.

Due to certain circumstances, she finds herself on the run, but everywhere she goes, she gets tangled up in the mysterious deaths of strangers. The interesting thing about this show is that it follows the inverted detective story structure. This means that the crime and perpetrator are revealed early on, and the narrative tracks how the detective solves the mystery with the help of clues and leads.

Like Only Murders in the Building, Poker Face is also able to build the suspense and maintain it with a string of unexpected twists and turns so viewers can never truly guess what will happen in the end.

Where to watch: The 10-episode Poker Face is available for streaming on Peacock and Apple TV+.

While fans of Only Murders in the Building wait for season four's finale to release, they can indulge in the above-mentioned murder mystery shows that are equally entertaining and addictive.
