7 shows to watch if you liked 'Tell Me Lies'

Created by Meaghan Oppenheimer, Tell Me Lies is a drama show based on a novel by Carola Lovering. Starring Grace Van Patten, Jackson White, and others, the show focuses on the intense and toxic relationship between Lucy Albright and Stephen DeMarco.

The show takes place over eight years and follows the major highlights of Lucy and Stephen’s passionate entanglement. The series deals with themes of passion and deceit and explores the consequences such relationships have not only for the people within but also for those around them.

Similar to Tell Me Lies, Conversation with Friends is an adaptation of a novel by Sally Rooney. The Irish show revolves around two friends, Frances and Bobby, who become entangled with an older married couple, Nick and Melissa. The show starts with a light-hearted tone but gets darker as it progresses.

As Bobby and Melissa start flirting, Frances and Nick develop a torrid affair. Like Lucy, Frances begins to have an unhealthy attachment with Nick and discovers that he has secrets of his own. Fans should watch this one for the complex drama.


2) Sex/Life - Netflix

Created by Stacy Rukeyser, Sex/Life, is an erotic drama series inspired by a novel by BB Easton like Tell Me Lies. Starring Sarah Shahi, Mike Vogel, and Adam Demos, the show revolves around a middle-aged mother, Billie, who starts to fantasize about her life when she was younger and wilder.

When an old flame comes back into her life, Billie is tempted to begin an affair that might ruin everyone and everything around her. It has the same intensity and deals with the magnetism of toxic relationships. Lucy and Billie are similar in their flawed but relatable persona.


3) You - Netflix

One of the more popular series, You, is a psychological thriller also based on the books by Caroline Kepnes. The show has four seasons but the second season with Penn Badgley as Joe Goldberg and Victoria Pedretti as Love, has many similarities to Lucy and Stephen’s toxic romance.

Essentially, the show is about Joe, who stalks women and wins them over through manipulation and charm. Once anyone falls for him, he does not shy away from even killing them. Love, however, proves to be his match, and is equally obsessed with him. Both shows deal with toxicity, infatuation and its deadly ramifications.


4) The Affair - Amazon Prime Video

Created by Sarah Treem and Hagai Levi, The Affair, is an intense drama that offers the same passionate romance and deceit as Tell Me Lies. Starring Ruth Wilson as Alison Lockhart and Dominic West as Noah Solloway, the series revolves around their steamy extramarital affair.

Like the relationship between Stephen and Lucy that has devastating consequences for themselves and others, Alison and Noah’s affair also engulfs all who encounter them. More mature and psychological, this is the perfect series to watch after Tell Me Lies.


5) Scandal - Amazon Prime Video

Created by Shonda Rhimes, Scandal, is a riveting political thriller starring Tony Goldwyn and revolves around Kerry Washington’s character Olivia Pope, who runs a crisis management firm. The series deals with her personal and professional life.

Intense and passionate, the show deals with Pope’s romance with the President that threatens to have major emotional and political consequences. More mature than Tell Me Lies, both shows essentially highlight the reality of torrid affairs. Immensely successful, this one is a compelling watch.


6) Doctor Foster - Amazon Prime Video

Starring Suranne Jones, Jodie Comer, Bertie Carvel, and others, Doctor Foster is a psychological thriller series about doctor Foster (Jones), who leads an idyllic life, until she suspects her husband of an affair. Like Tell Me Lies, the show is about a woman learning hidden aspects of her partner.

Both shows start with an affair but develop into something much deeper and complicated. As Foster begins to find buried secrets about her husband, she goes through the same betrayal that Lucy does in Tell Me Lies. Even though the show deals with older characters, it’s a compelling watch.


7) You’re the Worst - Disney Plus

You’re the Worst adopts a dark-comedy approach towards a toxic relationship. Starring Aya Cash and Chris Geere, the show follows the long-term effects of an unhealthy relationship. Like Lucy and Stephen, Jimmy and Gretchen have their faults and can’t seem to let go of each other.

The show is praised for its sharp wit, realism, and character depth. Portraying modern romance can be difficult, but You’re the Worst does it with sophistication and precision. Fans of Tell Me Lies, who want to watch something similar with some laughs, should check it out.
