A true crime series, Netflix’s Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story puts the spotlight on a chilling case from 1989. The story followed Gypsy Blanchard, a girl subjected to years of abuse by her mother, Claudine “Dee Dee” Blanchard. However, in a departure from Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, this one is not a straightforward crime story.

Dee Dee had convinced everyone around her that Gypsy was severely ill and required constant care, something that Gypsy herself believed to be true. However, upon realizing the deceit, she vows revenge, killing her mother in the process.

If Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story probed the motivations of the two accused, Mindhunter makes diving into the minds of some of history’s most infamous serial killers its major selling point.

In two seasons and 19 episodes, the show stretched from the late ‘70s to the early ‘80s following FBI agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench, along with psychologist Wendy Carr. The trio had launched a research project to interview imprisoned serial killers, understand their psyche, and use it for solving other cases.

In the meantime, viewers get to experience tension and unease as hardened criminals go one after the other, retelling the details of their crimes.

Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story is currently catching the eye of many true-crime enthusiasts for its no-holds-barred exploration of the real-life incident it tells about. Yet, those who have gone through its end, may turn their gaze to this list and continue their tryst with authentic crime thrillers.
