The fantasy spin-off series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, was commissioned by HBO in April 2023. It is the second prequel series to Game of Thrones, after House of the Dragon, and is based on the Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas by George R. R. Martin. The series will feature Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall and Dexter Sol Ansell as his squire named Egg in leading roles.

In terms of the timeline, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms takes place around 72 years after the events of House of the Dragon and close to 100 years before the events of Game of Thrones. The show's logline reads:

“A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg."

It continues:

"Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.”

The series is adapted from George R. R. Martin's novella series titled Tales of Dunk and Egg. It includes three books, The Hedge Knight (1998), The Sworn Sword (2003), and The Mystery Knight (2010). Martin is even expected to write more in the future. An illustrated version of the book series was released in 2015 under the title, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

The HBO series is based on the story of The Hedge Knight and depicts the adventures of Ser Duncan 'Dunk' the Tall (the future Lord Commander of the Kingsguard) and his young squire nicknamed Egg (the future King Aegon V Targaryen). The series will contain six episodes, which is noticeably shorter than both its prequels, which consist of eight to 10 episodes per season.

Although the show was ordered by HBO in April 2023, the dual Hollywood strikes that lasted several months in 2023 delayed work on the project. The series began filming on June 18, 2024, in Belfast, Ireland, and is slated to air on HBO and Max in late 2025.

Three episodes of the series will be directed by Owen Harris, while the remaining three will be directed by Sarah Adina Smith. Harris has previously directed the renowned San Junipero episode of Black Mirror from season 3, which Martin has described as his "all-time favorite episode" from the anthology series. Smith, meanwhile, has directed a few episodes of Lessons in Chemistry on Apple TV+.

Martin serves as the creator and executive producer of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Its pilot episode is written by Ira Parker, one of the show's executive producers. Parker also wrote House of the Dragon's season 1 episode 4, titled King of the Narrow Sea, in which Prince Daemon takes Princess Rhaenyra to visit Flea Bottom in King's Landing.

The show's other executive producers are Vince Gerardis, Sarah Bradshaw, Owen Harris, and House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal.
