A Man on the Inside is a new comedy show on Netflix by creator Michael Schur, known for creating comedy gold, such as The Office, Parks and Recreation, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and The Good Place. This new series starring Ted Danson (The Good Place) has just been renewed for a second season, weeks after the first season premiered.
Charles (Danson) is a retired widower who, at the behest of his daughter, answers an advertisement in the newspaper by a private detective. A heartwarming story ensues as he goes undercover at a senior retirement facility to gather information about a stolen heirloom while forging new friendships and strengthening his relationship with his daughter.
The official synopsis of the show as per Netflix reads:
"A retired professor gets a new lease on life when a private investigator hires him to go undercover inside a San Francisco retirement home."
The show was inspired by the Oscar-nominated Chilean documentary The Mole Agent, based on a true story. Season 1 of A Man on the Inside aired on Netflix on November 21, 2024, and has been on the platform's top 10 shows in English for three weeks since its release.
Netflix confirms season 2 of A Man on the Inside
On Monday, December 16, just three weeks after its first season aired, Netflix confirmed on their official X account that A Man on the Inside will be renewed for a second season, set to release in 2025.
Creator Mike Schur is elated about the upcoming season, and according to The Hollywood Reporter, he and the other writers tossed around ideas for a new season even before the first one wrapped up.
A reason for the show's resounding success is the wholesome story, which deals with delicate subjects like aging and diseases through nuanced comedy while also leaving the audience emotional and teary-eyed. For all the thrill-seekers out there, it also gradually builds up suspense before finally solving a mystery at the end of its eight-episode arc.
As per Forbes, the first season was extremely well received by both critics and audiences. The American Film Institute has named it one of the top TV programs of the year, and Danson has received a Golden Globe nomination for his performance.
All you need to know about season 1 of A Man on the Inside
A Man on the Inside opens with Charles' daughter requesting him to find some excitement in his monotonous life, which leads him to answer an ad by a private investigator. He is then hired to infiltrate a retirement community and spy on the inhabitants to identify a thief who stole a priceless necklace.
Charles' journey leads to new friendships within the community, but he also confronts the harsher realities of old age, including diseases such as Alzheimer's. However, the show ends on a positive note, with Charles finding joy and a renewed sense of purpose in life after the thief is identified.
The show deviates from many of Schur's previous works because rather than being a comedy, it is wholesome, heartwarming, and a tearjerker. It celebrates second chances and embraces old age in a world obsessed with all things young.
"I think America is obsessed with youth...That’s stupid and self-defeating. One of the things you miss out on if you are youth-obsessed is just honest, straightforward depictions of all the parts of humanity as we get older. The happiness, the sadness, the joy, the pain, the misery, the adventure," Schur told Netflix's Tudum.
