A Very Royal Scandal is a historical drama series produced by Amazon MGM. The series revolves around the career of former BBC journalist Emily Maitlis. Maitlis conducted an interview with Prince Andrew in 2019, for BBC Two’s Newsnight.

The series in a nutshell is the retelling of Maitlis’ professional and personal journey, leading up to the landmark 2019 interview. The series was released recently on September 19, with all three episodes now available for streaming on Amazon Prime. A Very Royal Scandal has the following official synopsis, according to IMDb:

“Explores Emily Maitlis journey as a News night journalist and Prince Andrew's disastrous interview with her.”

A Very Royal Scandal has been written by Jeremy Brock and directed by Julian Jarrold, and delves into the incredible career graph of one of the most popular BBC journalists of recent decades. The series majorly deals with the controversy emanating from the 2019 interview. It involved Prince Andrew attempting to rekindle his reputation after multiple controversies had hit the royal family.

A Very Royal Scandal exposes never-seen-before details about 2019 BBC interview

In a nutshell, A Very Royal Scandal deals with the ill-fated Prince Andrew interview with Emily Maitlis, which was held on November 14, 2019. The series, which comprises three episodes, opens on the fateful date when the interview took place at Buckingham Palace.

Owing to a last-minute approval for the filming, Maitlis was seen arriving at the location disheveled. While the agreement was that the interview will revolve around Prince Andrew’s recent charity work, it was the first time Prince Andrew was making a public appearance since the allegations related to Jeffrey Epstein had come up.

Further, Virginia Giuffre had also alleged that the Prince had ra**ed her back when she was 17, which acted as the trigger for the narrative to trace back to 2011. This was when the allegations related to Virginia Giuffre had first come up. The series attempts to portray Prince Andrew as a privileged, almost spoiled man. Michael Sheen, who portrays the Prince, is seen as a man-child attempting to control his employees.

This is also true with respect to Prince Andrew’s past relationships, notably the one he shared with ex-wife Sarah Ferguson, portrayed by Claire Rushbrook in A Very Royal Scandal. Prince Andrew is shown having a close bond with his daughters, but at times is seen relying on his status alone to protect him from various allegations.

Further, even as his defense against the allegations appears flimsy, Maitlis is shown as a determined journalist itching to get to the bottom of the truth. The contrasting personalities of the two shine through, as Maitlis incessantly tries to shift Prince Andrew’s focus on the vast number of allegations levied against him.

Regardless, even as he fails to do so, the series perfectly captures Prince Andrew’s alleged personality. The prince is seen oblivious to the kind of impact the allegations have had on his reputation and appears to live in a bubble. While the first episode majorly deals with the set-up, the second episode moves on to the interview itself.

Here, Prince Andrew is shown confident in the kind of responses he gives out, and appears to believe that he produced a winning performance the rest of the family will be proud of. However, the interview itself was met with widespread backlash, and the Prince was accused of using his status to completely avoid the discourse related to his past.

Episode 3 attempts to hit the nail on the head, and delves into the kind of incredible protection that Prince Andrew has allegedly always enjoyed. The series concludes with a stellar note and paints Prince Andrew as a clueless individual who does not appreciate or understand the impact of the allegations made against him.

Further, it attempts to place his confidence in stark contrast to the kind of worldwide backlash the interview earned him. Emily Maitlis appears to completely understand the kind of hue and cry the interview might lead to and eventually does. However, even as she is left stunned by a number of responses that Prince Andrew mustered up, the Prince himself appears calm, composed, and almost celebratory in the way in which he responded to the allegations.

A Very Royal Scandal, in this way, attempts to place two hugely different perspectives at the forefront and exposes the complex bubble that the Royal family exists in. A Very Royal Scandal is available to watch on Amazon Prime.
