Two of Philadelphia's shows, the sitcom Abbott Elementary and the gritty, dark comedy It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, will have a crossover. It will happen in two episodes as the characters of the show It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia will guest on Abbott Elementary. It is expected to be released this December as part of Abbott's current season.

To reciprocate, the cast of Abbott Elementary will appear in season 17 of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. They will blend socially conscious humor through the quirky style of Abbott Elementary with the unpredictable shenanigans in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Both shows take place in Philadelphia and broadcast on Disney-owned networks, making the crossover an organic pairing. Abbott Elementary creator Quinta Brunson and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia creator Rob McElhenney alluded to it when they spoke at San Diego Comic-Con.

In an official announcement, it was revealed that It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia will first appear in Abbott's season four episode 409, followed by the teachers from Abbott visiting Paddy's Pub in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia's forthcoming season.

Abbott Elementary and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia worlds blend behind the scenes

This crossover idea started as a joke but quickly came to fruition as writers from each show worked together to bring together their contrasting tones. Executive producers Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker said at first, the teams had doubts about how Abbott's "wholesome" world would mesh with the dark humor of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

McElhenney and Charlie Day were very much integrated into the ideas of storyline contributions. They even went out with Abbott's writers and spent time building out some plot ideas to ensure each episode captured the essence of the show.

Character highlights and plot teasers

The crossover will start with some It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia characters, including McElhenney, Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton, Kaitlin Olson, and Danny DeVito, invading Abbott's classrooms.

Kaitlin Olson, who plays Dee Reynolds, recently gushed at Variety's Power of Women event about the enjoyment of being able to "get nasty" with her character in a school setting where typical classroom rules don't apply.

Meanwhile, Abbott star Lisa Ann Walter requested scenes specifically with Olson, leading to anticipated comedic tension between Walter's tough-talking Melissa Schemmenti and Olson's Dee.

The second half of the crossover will show what happens when the Abbott teachers enter the crazy world of Paddy's Pub. Although details regarding the role of the teachers in Sunny are kept secret, Schumacker teased viewers by saying Charlie's character would have a significant storyline with Abbott's characters.

Production challenges and excitement

Currently, with the filming of season 17, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia will be ready for its episodes to drop in 2025. The production schedule has required flexibility, as the stars are juggling various projects, including Olson's work on ABC's High Potential and Howerton's role in Netflix's Sirens.

Nevertheless, the teams were excited about this opportunity to cross-shop, especially with the challenge of implementing Sunny's irreverent humor amidst Abbott's warm-hearted energy.

The crossover marks a creative collaboration between two different worlds and highlights the unique styles of comedy each show brings to the Philadelphia TV scene.

Given that the cast of both shows are on board and with all the potential the narrative of this combination offers, fans are excited to see what this crossover will look like.
