What is the history of Darkhold in Agatha All Along?
In the MCU, the Darkhold is a powerful tool carrying secrets meant for the daring witches and wiccans. Its origins date back to ancient times. WandaVision does not detail how Agatha came into possession of this powerful tome and her ties to dark magic are not revealed either.
The Darkhold's history in Agatha All Along is intertwined with Agatha's past, including the tragic loss of her son, Nicky aka Nicholas Scratch, and her quest for power. Darkhold is referenced multiple times throughout the show. In one scene, while on the way to the Witches' Road, Jennifer Kale (Sasheer Zamata) tells Billy Maximoff (Joe Locke) that Agatha is rumored to have traded her son for the Darkhold.
Further in the show Agatha also has a vision of a baby’s cradle with the Darkhold inside it. Rio Vidal (Aubrey Plaza) hints that Agatha did something terrible to someone she loved, suggesting once again that she perhaps traded her son for the book.
However, it is revealed later that Nicky dies despite Agatha trying to save him for six years, as they go around stealing powers from witches to save his life. Rio eventually claims Nicky's life and Agatha is unable to do anything to save him. There is no further explanation of the Darkhold's connection to Nicky's death in the show.
The Darkhold and Agatha’s Future
In the final episode of Agatha All Along, Agatha dies as a part of the deal with Rio, sparing Billy's life. In a twist, Agatha reappears as a ghost after the final battle with Rio. Her spectral form remains, and she visits Billy, and together they decide that she will guide him in exploring his powers and in finding his missing brother, Tommy.
The finale does not clarify what happened to the Darkhold after Wanda destroys it as seen in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Presently, the book is in no one's possession.
During her trial in the 1700s, Agatha is accused of using dark magic by her coven, which also hints at the possibility that she might have acquired the Darkhold by then. Then there are implications of her trading her son for the Darkhold. The MCU has not confirmed any one reason, but the comics have a storyline.
In the comics, Agatha attempts to create her own version of the Darkhold following its destruction by Wanda. She uses Chaos Magic to perform a ritual to create a new Darkhold, but her plan is foiled by the Avengers.
The resulting explosion creates the Darkhold as a young boy named Darkhold. Agatha and the boy pose as mother and son for a while, but the boy eventually leaves her. Whether the show will follow the same plot or not, is not confirmed.
The ending of this season echoes Agatha's role as a mentor in the comics. Her ghostly existence hints that she could be a part of future projects, either in a second season or other Marvel shows/movies.
