He was set to pilot the aircraft for their expedited flight training mission to Scotland as war nears. However, before they could fly out, he collapsed on the ground and was later diagnosed with brucellosis. Deemed less than 100% fit, he was put off the crew and given ground duty.
Meanwhile, his former crew members continued with the mission with a new pilot, but the tragedy engulfed them on the flight home when German planes attacked them. Hibbert died on impact and Banerjee was fighting for his life. The tragedy plus James feeling like he's no longer useful and an aircraft pilot at RAF Abingdon forced him to go home to Darrowby and return to becoming a vet.
All Creatures Great and Small Season 5 Episode 1 also saw Siegfried leaning more on Carmody for help at Skeldale House. Mrs. Hall also took the chance to become the first female blackout warden as she took a more active role in contributing to the war effort.
