All Severance Season 1 & 2 filming locations, explored

Severance is a science fiction psychological thriller television series released on February 18, 2022, on Apple TV Plus. Starring Adam Scott, Zach Cherry, Britt Lower, John Turturro, Tramell Tillman, Dichen Lachman, Jen Tullock, Michael Chernus, Christopher Walken, and Patricia Arquette, the dystopian series is created by Dan Erickson and directed by Ben Stiller and Aoife McArdle.

At present, the show is awaiting the release of its second season, scheduled to come out on January 17, 2025. A trailer for the same was released on July 10, 2024, on YouTube. Along with the trailer, a small synopsis for the upcoming season and a summary of the past season were also included, which read:

"In Severance, Mark Scout (Adam Scott) leads a team at Lumon Industries, whose employees have undergone a severance procedure, which surgically divides their memories between their work and personal lives."

It continued:

"This daring experiment in “work-life balance” is called into question as Mark finds himself at the center of an unraveling mystery that will force him to confront the true nature of his work… and of himself."

Talking about season 2 it said:

"In season two, Mark and his friends learn the dire consequences of trifling with the severance barrier, leading them further down a path of woe."

With that being said, one of the key players behind the show's success is its exquisite filming locations which add extra depth to its narrative. For projects set in a dystopian era, such as this, certain structural requirements need to be fulfilled first.

For this show, it was the use of symmetrical buildings, usually pivoting between the colours grey and blue, buildings with long corridors or large hall spaces, and buildings with a lot of structure within themselves. To fulfil all of these requirements the show has been extensively shot in places around the USA that fit these descriptions.

Bell Laboratories - 101 Crawfords Corner Road, Holmdel Township, New Jersey, USA

Scenes inside and outside of the Lumon Building which is at the center of the series are filmed at the Bell Laboratories situated at 101 Crawfords Corner Road, Holmdel Township, New Jersey, USA. The location offers the perfect blend of modern and dystopian required for the series.

Bell Laboratories has been a research and development facility for over 44 years. Through the years, the Bell Labs Holmdel Complex has undergone multiple restorations. At present, the complex is being used multipurposefully, as a living and a working space.

Holmdel, New Jersey, USA

Holmdel Township, New Jersey, which includes the Bell Labs, is also used in filming large portions of Severance seasons 1 and 2. The Lumon Industries Building shown in the series is situated in this location. Other buildings belonging to this township were also used for filming portions of the show.

The township, which is a bedroom community of New York City in the New York Metropolitan Area, is situated close to Raritan Bay in the Raritan Valley region. It is also home to Bell Labs and the PNC Bank Arts Center.

Village Gate Way, Nyack, New York, USA

One of the locations that has been used for filming scenes of the show is Village Gate Way, Nyack, New York, USA. The scenes involving Mark's and Mrs. Solvig's houses and Baird Creek Manor have all been filmed at this location.

Village Gate Way, Nyack comprises several properties under its jurisdiction. If you have ever been to the location then you might be able to spot a few places yourself.

69 Old Rte 9W, Port Ewen/Kingston, New York, USA

In one of the scenes from season 1 of Severance when Mark is shown to return home, he passes over a bridge, which is the famous Kingston–Port Ewen Suspension Bridge, also known as the Rondout Creek Bridge, Old Bridge or Wurts Street Bridge.

The steel suspension bridge, which recently underwent renovations, connects the City of Kingston and the village of Port Ewen.
