Netflix's latest true crime docu-series, American Murder: Laci Peterson, examines the murder of Laci Peterson at the hands of her husband, Scott Peterson. Since its release, the series has already become one of the top shows in the world. Much like most of the true crime content in recent years, American Murder has gained significant momentum and prompted a lot of discussions around the world.
As true-crime fans tend to analyze tiny but crucial details, Scott Peterson's last message to his wife before she disappeared has become a source of a lot of curiosity. This message was depicted in Netflix's docu-series while covering the grizzly murder of Laci and her unborn child.
Scott Peterson left his wife a message that said:
"Hey beautiful. I just left you a message at home. It’s 2:15. I’m leaving Berkeley. I won’t be able to get to Vella Farms to get the basket for papa. I was hoping you would get this message and go on out there. I’ll see you in a bit, sweetie. Love you. Bye."
Apart from the very evident timestamp, which can be viewed as a way of covering his tracks, there is also a curious detail not mentioned in the docu-series. Scott Peterson's message to his wife was the last time he tried contacting her, which is very odd, given that she went missing and in usual circumstances, a husband would try to call her multiple times.
Analyzing Scott Peterson's message and behavior on the day of Laci Peterson's murder
On the day Laci Peterson disappeared, Scott allegedly went fishing at Berkeley Marina. He claimed that he left around 9:30 am that morning, but cellphone towers showed otherwise. As per the records, Scott made a call from around his house at around 10:08 pm and a neighbor saw the Peterson's dog wandering around 10 minutes later, which is enough to hint that Laci had disappeared (or was murdered).
So this 10-minute window may be the time Scott killed his wife. This detail was brought in during the trial but the defense claimed that cellphone towers can be unreliable.
Anyhow, Scott Peterson called Laci and delivered this message, mentioning the time, from his fishing trip. However, a key detail in this is that he never tried calling Laci after he left this message. This was pointed out by a user in a Reddit thread where many took part in discussing the case.
As the Reddit post shows, the last call Scott made was the one where he left the message, which remains suspicious as a husband would usually call their missing wife. It almost hints that Scott already knew what happened to Laci by then and hence never tried.
This is of significance because Scott Peterson still claims that he did not murder Laci Peterson, despite getting sentenced to life for the murder. Moreover, the LA Innocence Project has also picked up his case and he is currently trying to get a retrial.
It is unlikely that Scott Peterson will be deemed innocent in the future, especially with all the evidence stacking up against him. And there seems to be more from true-crime enthusiasts around the world, which all seem to implicate the husband.
You can catch the entire case on American Murder: Laci Peterson. It is now streaming on Netflix.
