Apple Cider Vinegar’s plot & theme: What we know so far
Netflix's upcoming limited series Apple Cider Vinegar is about the rise and fall of a wellness influencer. It explores the controversial story of Belle Gibson, an Australian wellness influencer whose fabricated health claims captivated and deceived audiences worldwide.
The six-episode drama stars Kaitlyn Dever as Belle, the social media personality who gains fame by claiming to have cured her terminal brain cancer through health and wellness practices. However, the twist lies in the shocking truth as Gibson was never diagnosed with or cured of the malignant tumor she widely publicized.
Apple Cider Vinegar examines the power of social media during its formative years, which gives a look at the rise of influencer culture, wellness trends and the "girl boss" startup movement.
The upcoming show questions the ethical boundaries of online platforms and highlights the lack of accountability that allowed such deception to flourish.
Set against the backdrop of Instagram's early days, the series’ themes are about ambition, manipulation and the consequences of living a public lie. It also critiques a time when social media was relatively unchecked, which makes it an ideal environment for Gibson to launch her fraudulent media empire. This venture includes a mobile app and a companion cookbook.
