Betty La Fea, the Story Continues, the long-awaited sequel to Yo soy Betty, la fea, premiered on Amazon Prime Video on July 19, 2024. The Colombian series is back after 25 years, consisting of 10 episodes exploring Betty's life following the original series' happy ending.
The official synopsis of Betty La Fea, the Story Continues on Amazon Prime Video reads:
"Betty has not lived with Armando for two years after having found him in a compromising situation with Marcela. Excited about her daughter's return to Colombia, she tries to strengthen her bond with her, but pressure on Ecomoda and enemies from the past will do everything possible to keep her from both Mila and Armando."
Betty La Fea (1999) was an avant-garde show of its time, featuring a woman as the protagonist, who was not physically as attractive, as per the expectations of the mainstream canon. It focused on delivering the social message that women are more than their physical appeal.
In a statement with El País on July 19, 2024, Mauricio Cruz, director of Betty La Fea, the Story Continues, reflected on the changing perception of beauty over time:
""We have all felt ugly at some point in our lives." But Orozco admits that in the original version there were scenes that reflected the sexism of the era, scenes that would be unacceptable today."
