Beyond Goodbye season 1 is a Japanese romantic drama series that is directed by renowned filmmaker Hiroshi Kurosaki. The series is based on the story crafted by Yoshikazu Okada, who had earlier collaborated with him for the NHK series TV novel Hiyokko. Beyond Goodbye season 1 is a part of Netflix's recent addition to Japanese TV shows. The series will premiere on the streaming platform on November 14, 2024.
Beyond Goodbye season 1 narrates the story of a woman named Saeko, who is heartbroken over the loss of her lover. Yusuke is killed in an accident, right on the day he proposes to her. Saeko's life starts to heal in the most unexpected way when a stranger named Naruse enters her life. She begins to feel a strong affection towards him and is shocked upon realizing he carries Yusuke's transplanted heart.
The story of Beyond Goodbye season 1 deals with the themes of love and loss. It traces the longing between two lovers even after death. Prominent actors Kasumi Arimura and Kentaro Sakaguchi play the leading roles of Saeko and Naruse.

1) Kasumi Arimura as Saeko
In Beyond Goodbye season 1, Japanese actress Kasumi Arimura plays the role of the central character, Saeko. She is a young woman who had plans to marry her lover Yusuke. But right on the day he proposed to her, their bus meets a tragic accident. Though Saeko manages to survive, Yusuke dies.
Arimura started her acting journey with NHK's asadora (mini-episode) drama series Amachan (2013). She later went on to act in another asadora named Hiyooko in 2017, playing the leading role of Mineko Yatabe. Some of her major screen credits include When Marnie Was There (2014), Flying Colors (2015), Strobe Edge (2015), and We Made a Beautiful Bouquet (2021).
2) Kentaro Sakaguchi as Naruse
Kentaro Sakaguchi plays the character of Naruse, who has a few days left to live, as declared by the doctor. However, his fate changes upon receiving a heart from a donor. Naruse realizes that he has inherited memories of the donor during the transplant. Destiny eventually leads Naruse to meet Saeko, the same person whom Yusuke loved before his death.
The Japanese actor was an exclusive model for Men's Non-No magazine for seven years. Sakaguchi started his acting career with screen works like Her Grandfather (2014) and Our Little Sister (2015). He went on to rise into prominence with his roles like Haruta Nakajo in TV dramas like Love That Makes You Cry (2016). Some of his popular works include 64: Part 1 and Part 2 (2016), Hell Dogs (2022), and What Comes After Love (2024).
3) Toma Ikuta as Yusuke Nakamachi
Toma Ikuta plays the role of Saeko's dead lover, Yusuke. On the day he proposes to Saeko while traveling in a bus through a snowy road, their bus meets an accident. The rescuers discover them amidst the snow, and though Saeko manages to live, Yusuke is declared dead. His heart is transplanted to a patient named Naruse, providing him with a new life.
Toma Ikuta is from Hokkaido, Japan, which serves as a backdrop for Beyond Goodbye. Ikuta started his acting career with TV shows like Neverland (2001) and Be Nice to People (2002). He eventually went on to play major roles in works like The Fallen Angel (2010), Dogwood Tree (2010), My Teacher (2017), The Brain Man, My Story Is Long (2019), and Kokuhaku Confession (2024).
4) Yuri Nakamura as Miki
In Beyond Goodbye season 1, Yuri Nakamura plays the role of Miki, Naruse's wife. She goes a period of intense grief upon realizing her husband has very limited time to live. But their lives change completely when Naruse receives a heart transplant and manages to survive.
Also known as Woori Song, Yuri is a Japanese-Korean actress who started her career as a singer. She made her major screen debut playing the role of Kyonja in Pacchigi! Love & Peace. Some of Yuri's other major screen credits include Like Father, Like Son (2013), After the Storm (2016), and A Bride for Rip Van Winkle (2016).
