The Harry Potter franchise is arguably one of the biggest in the world, with all eight of the movies based on J.K. Rowling's acclaimed work gaining great critical and commercial acclaim. The movies seemingly did so many things right, from great casting to excellent narrative, and most of them remain some of the best works in the fantasy genre.
However, there's one thing in the movies that left a lot of fans, and seemingly even Bonnie Wright (Ginny Weasley in the movies) herself, dissatisfied. The actress spoke to Variety about the upcoming television series adaptation of Harry Potter from HBO, where she said that the series should focus on the chemistry between Harry and Ginny, something the movies failed to explore properly.
There were also plenty of complaints about Ginny's character, as it was completely underused in the movies as compared to the novels. This was also something Wright pointed out in her interview, citing that if the movies could be much longer, they could have incorporated Ginny in more ways.
The Harry Potter series is yet to find its perfect cast for this famed piece of work.
"More of the development of the relationship between Ginny Weasley and Harry Potter"- Bonnie Wright reveals the element she wants to see in upcoming series
Bonnie Wright played the character of Ginny from the age of nine and continued to do so for the next decade. Although the character was among the most important ones in the novels, the movies couldn't really incorporate the story well, making most of Harry and Ginny's moments feel rushed.
This is an element Wright would like the series to improve on. She discussed this with Variety at the Back to Hogwarts event at New York’s Grand Central Terminal on September 1, 2024. Speaking about the things she would like to see in the series, Wright said:
"So many things. More of the development of the relationship between Ginny and Harry,...There’s nuanced moments of where they begin to fall in love. I think more of that arc of her character becoming this real loyal sidekick to Harry and how she really understands and knows his story and who he is and is the best partner for him."
She continued:
"So I just hope we see that evolution of that character — and so many characters. If only we could have had five-hour movies. There are so many characters that have moments I love from the books — Neville and Luna — so I’m hoping as a fan of the books that I get to see more."
Apart from Harry and Ginny, there were multiple other characters too that the movies left out. Due to the limitations of runtime, the eight movies could not incorporate every element from the seven books.
The fifth movie, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, perhaps suffered the most from this. The longest book in the series did not really fit into the two-and-a-half-hour movie and hence had to sacrifice crucial plot points.
That included some key developments in Harry and Ginny's relationship. The same thing happened again in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, where fans missed out on the developments that led Harry and Ginny closer.
Anyhow, with the restraints of runtime gone, the series may be able to finally deliver and build on these crucial plotlines from the Harry Potter universe.
The Harry Potter series is expected to ger more updates soon. Stay tuned.
