Bridgerton season 4 will be adapting the 2001 novel titled An Offer from a Gentleman for television screens. The upcoming season will focus on Benedict Bridgerton as he finally finds true love while coming across a "lady in silver" at a masquerade ball, hosted by his sibling, Violet Bridgerton.
This lady turns out to be a low-born woman named Sophie Beckett, and thus Benedict begins his pursuit of her. Sophie Beckett has not made any prior appearances in the first three seasons.
While the original novel establishes Sophie to be an illegitimate daughter who's been living a life of servitude, it is unclear as of writing what changes the series might make to Sophie's characterization or background, or who the casting choice for Sophie Beckett will be.
Sophie Beckett from Bridgerton season 4: Daughter of the Earl of Penwood
In the Julia Quinn's novel An Offer from a Gentleman, Sophie is introduced as the illegitimate daughter of the sixth Earl of Penwood, Richard Gunningworth. After the Earl's death, she's subjected to a life of servitude thanks to her stepmother, Aramita, and her step step sisters.
This is thanks to Aramita being bitter about Sophie's very existence, as it undermines her ability to produce an heir for the Earl. Aramita, therefore, defies the Earl's will, which had asked her to care for Sophie, and instead forces her into a life of unpaid servitude.
Sophie's arc plays out like a Cinderella story, as she conspires with her fellow servants to take possession of her grandmother's gown and sneaks into the masquerade ball where Benedict Bridgerton is. She captivates his heart and then sneaks out at midnight.
Benedict then proceeds to pine for her and search for her throughout the rest of the novel, and ends up having to confront issues of class division and prejudice in order to do right by Sophie and prove himself worthy of her love.
Given the liberties the Netflix series has taken with its source material, it is possible for changes to be made to Sophie Beckett's background and characterization in Bridgerton season 4.
However, nothing about her has been confirmed other than the fact that she will still be the "Lady in Silver" Benedict encounters at the masquerade ball.
Benedict's arc by Bridgerton season 4 differs from the novels
One aspect where the show has already deviated from its source material is Benedict's character arc. This is apparent from the fact that while An Offer from a Gentleman is the third novel in Julia Quinn's original series, the Netflix show chose to adapt the fourth novel, Romancing Mister Bridgerton, for its third season.
Unlike in the original novels, Benedict Bridgerton in the Netflix series is pansexual, as shown by his affair with Lady Tilley Arnold and Paul Suarez, which didn't happen in the books. This change to Benedict's sexuality even led to speculation around Sophie Beckett's gender before Netflix confirmed she'd still be the "Lady in Silver".
Benedict's characterization in the show is also more relaxed than it was in the books, as he fancies himself as a bohemian unconcerned with societal expectations. This has allowed him to develop in the background of the first three seasons before he finally steps into the limelight in Bridgerton season 4.
There is no confirmed release date for Bridgerton season 4 yet. The first three installments are available on Netflix in all regions.
