Zack Snyder returns to the world of animation via his Norse-mythology-inspired series Twilight of the Gods. The series premiered with Season 1, comprising six episodes, on September 19, 2024, and has received some rave reviews. Currently boasting a 7.3 IMDB rating, Twilight of the Gods has some major stars in its voice, and revolves around the character of Sigrid, a half-human who wishes to exact revenge on Thor.

This version of the Norse god is starkly different from the one MCU fans might be aware of. Played by Pilou Asbæk, this Thor is a foul-mouthed, brutal, and arrogant god of Thunder who murders all the giants at Sigrid’s wedding with her lover Leif, a human king played by Stuart Martin. The series has the following official synopsis, and finished its first season on a cliffhanger:

“Animated series inspired by Norse Mythology. The Twilight of the Gods refers events that led to the destruction of Midgard and Asgard, then the death of most of the Æsir and Vanir gods in an ultimate battle against evil, the forces of nature and the Giants.”

While Twilight of the Gods has not yet been renewed for Season 2, things certainly look promising for the time being. This is especially true after an update from Zack Snyder himself, who claimed that the creators have already had discussions for the next season.

Twilight of the Gods Season 2: Everything we know

Twilight of the Gods was initially pitched by Jay Oliva, who has been listed as a creator alongside Zack Snyder and Eric Carrasco. While Netflix has now stayed mum on a potential Season 2, that is understandable, considering the series only recently premiered. However, Zack Snyder has now given a promising update about the show, according to ScreenRant:

“We definitely are talking about it. We know what we want to do, and we're all excited about a potential Season 2, so we'll see. Of course, [we've talked about it]. We're well on our way, so we'll see what happens.”

While that is by no means a confirmation, the reception of the series and the stellar names behind it means that Netflix can be expected to renew Twilight of the Gods. Further, Season 1 was deliberately left at a cliffhanger, with Thor proclaiming the following once he heard of the war that awaits him:

“And so begins the Song of Sigrid.”

Hence, Twilight of the Gods Season 1 left things open-ended, and the story can be expected to eventually be continued via Season 2. That seems even more true considering Zack Snyder’s promising comments.

With the creators seemingly on board, the ball now appears to be in Netflix’s court. Jay Oliva, the brain behind the project, claimed that he wanted to create a series that displaced human beings as the apex species on Earth. He said, as per What's on Netflix:

“The approach I wanted to focus on was how humans fit into this fantastical world and how insignificant one must feel next to these Norse gods. I wanted to tell a tale where mankind wasn’t the apex being on the earth. That they were a “lesser” race compared to these beings who walked amongst them and who often disregarded human life as meaningless and trifling.”

He continued:

“How could love survive in this very harsh world? Especially when love is blinded by pure, unadulterated vengeance. That was the core story I wanted to focus on, and that would ultimately lead to the events of Ragnarok.”

Hence, in addition to being a story revolving around Norse mythology, Twilight of the Gods is also a commentary on human existence, opposite to that of Norse gods. Twilight of the Gods is now available to be streamed on Netflix, and further updates about Season 2 can be expected in due time.
