Deadline published a report on December 28, 2024, indicating the plot of the upcoming series. As per the report, the series is about an up-and-coming football quarterback, Russ Holliday, played by Glen Powell.

Due to bad behavior, his college career comes to a disappointing end. However, Holliday disguises himself and joins a struggling Southern football team as Chad Powers. Powers is described as ‘talented’ and ‘affable’.

The Hollywood Reporter published a report on December 28, 2024, which states that Powell said the following about the show:

“He’s like the worst dude on the planet who puts on the mask of the most genial southern guy you’ve ever seen.”

Thus, the upcoming show is set to be a tale of a fall from grace and a new beginning. The titular character says in the teaser that he has ‘something coming up.’

What inspired the show?

The show is based on a sketch produced by Omaha Productions and ESPN+ in 2022, in which Eli Manning, the NFL quarterback and the brother of Peyton Manning, disguises himself and goes to walk-on tryouts for Penn State’s football team. Eli calls himself Chad Powers to hide his identity.

Both Powell and Waldron got the idea of the show from that sketch. The duo told The Hollywood Reporter in a report dated February 22, 2024:

"We’re both diehard college football fans. When we saw Eli as Chad Powers, we knew that was the way into a big, fun story about this world. We’re excited to be part of this team, and can’t wait to get Chad in the game. Think fast, run fast.”
