Episode 6 of Chicago P.D. season 12 was released on NBC on November 6, 2024. The latest episode of the popular police procedural series finally gives Kim Burgess, one of Intelligence’s finest officers, a chance to prove her mettle.
The episode starts with a visibly nervous Kim preparing for the upcoming test that will decide whether she can finally put on the badge of a Detective. She aces the written exam and the viva. However, fieldwork proves challenging.
Chicago P.D. season 12 episode 6 pairs Kim with a senior detective, Detective Suarez, who shadows the young officer’s movements on the field. By the end of the episode, Kim is made a Detective by Deputy Chief Charlie Reid. However, the promotion comes with a caveat that she cannot understand at the moment.
Chicago P.D. season 12 episode 6: Burgess becomes a Detective
As episode 6 opens, Adam, Kim’s husband, is quizzing her for the exam scheduled for the day. She has prepared her lessons well and is well past the other candidates in the exam hell. She is informed by Detective Suarez after an impressive interview session that a senior detective would ‘shadow’ her performance in the field. This would be the final step in her evaluation.
The next day, Kim is surprised that Suarez has been given the task of shadowing her. The junior and senior members of the police soon develop a master-apprentice relationship and Suarez pushes the sharp officer to take charge of the crime scene.
The crime scene turns out to be a neighborhood where three thugs have shot down a man whose car they had attacked to steal its converter. Kim, encouraged by Suarez, starts commanding the other officers. She asks them to set up a perimeter as she interviews the wife of the deceased man. There she learns that one of the suspects was shot.
Following a blood trail, Kim apprehends the suspect. However, before she can put the handcuffs on him, he tries to run away, eventually getting hit by a truck and dying in the process. Later, Kim is reprimanded by Suarez for abandoning the crime scene.
Challenges like this keep coming Kim’s way in episode 6 of Chicago P.D. season 12 but she persists in her quest to find the criminals. Eventually, she does succeed in catching all three thieves, even putting a bullet through the last one when he attacks her. For her impressive display in the field, Reid assigns her to Intelligence as a detective.

How does Kim catch the thieves in Chicago P.D. season 12 episode 6?
The first of the three thieves is killed by a moving truck before Kim can bring him in for interrogation. A thorough investigation leads the officers to uncover a converter-stealing racket, and they further establish the involvement of a person named Jorge by tracing his fingertips on a car.
Jorge’s wife Maria is brought in for questioning. However, she says Jorge has been trying hard to financially support her and her child. She refuses to give him up, no matter the consequences.
Jorge is located in a motel room, and Kim and Suarez are able to arrest him. They strike a deal with Jorge: the latter would give up all information regarding the third thief and their operation and in return, they would make sure he gets a lenient sentence and his family is taken care of.
This way, the third thief is caught. After a risky pursuit, he attacks Kim, and the officer has no option but to shoot him dead.

The promotion comes with a price
Towards the end of episode 6 of Chicago P.D. season 12, Suarez informs Kim that she will not be promoted to the position of a Detective since she is too kind and naive to tackle a job full of politics and subtle equations.
Kim accepts this decision, and despite Adam’s protest, she does not seek to challenge the evaluation. However, the final shots of Chicago P.D. season 12 episode 6 show that she has been promoted to a Detective.
She asked Voight if he had asked Reid to make that decision, and he denied it. Suarez previously told Kim that Reid was interested in her progress. Given that the episode is titled Pawns, Kim could be in the middle of a larger plan here, and she is unable to figure out at present what it is.
The next episode of Chicago P.D. season 12 will be released on November 13, 2024.
