Chicago PD season 12 episode 2, titled Blood Bleeds Blue, follows a tense season premiere as the Intelligence Unit of the 21st District has to deal with Emily Martel's murder, with Adam Ruzek and Kiana Cook on the hunt for the murderer.
While Adam Ruzek has been a longstanding member of the cast, Kiana Cook is a recent addition, and the two proceed to form a mutual bond of trust with one another.
Adam spends much of the October 2 episode reeling from the trauma of watching Martel die in front of him, which gives him a single-minded obsession with hunting down the killer. Eepisode 2 of Chicago PD season 12 also strains his relationship with Kim Burgess, who remains offscreen during this sequence, with Adam refusing to take a call from her because he can't bring himself to talk about Martel's death.
Emily Martel's killer is revealed to be Roy Darrow, who resorts to increasingly desperate measures, including endangering his own children, to escape justice. Adam and Kiana end up taking him down before he's able to hurt anybody else, with Adam finally taking a breather at the end of the episode.
Chicago PD season 12 episode 2 focuses on the killer's manhunt
A major focus of Chicago PD season 12 is the manhunt for Emily Martel's killer, an incredibly unstable and dangerous person named Roy Darrow.
The second episode of Chicago PD season 12 raises the stakes by revealing that Roy has a family of his own. Feeling cornered by the Intelligence Unit's manhunt, he begins to contemplate murdering his own children, and then himself. Therefore, Adam and Kiana are in a race against time to corner the man and bring him to justice.
Back at headquarters, Sergeant Hank Voight has to manage the fallout of Martel's murder, with other officers questioning him about his status, and him not being in a position to give a clear answer just yet. Meanwhile, Amy Morton ends up having an expanded role in the episode as well, thanks to her coordinating efforts with officers in the district lobby and working closely with Hank Voight to assist in the manhunt.
The episode does slow its pace a bit at times in order to give Adam and Kiana's relationship some room to develop. Adam is shown to be struggling under the repeated stresses he's experienced as a result of his long tenure in Chicago PD. Kiana, on the other hand, is introduced as a level-headed, no-nonsense cop whose main priority above all else is getting her job done.
Moreover, Roy Darrow proves to be a clear and present danger to his family as the episode goes on. He ends up shooting his own wife and kidnaps one of his sons, who's just a two-year-old toddler. His other son, knowing his life is in danger, takes his uncle's gun, and nearly takes matters into his own hands by going after his father.
Once the stakes are raised, Adam and Kiana race against the clock to eliminate the threat Roy Darrow poses to the family and everyone around him. Thankfully, they're able to take him down before he can hurt any of his kids.
The imminent threat eliminated, Adam can finally take a break, and sit down on the curb. Speaking to Officer Kiana, he simply says, "Well done, officer." to which she replies "You too, officer."
Chicago PD season 12 airs on Wednesdays, at 7 pm PT, on NBC.
