The official synopsis for the show from HBO reads:
"Former nurse-turned-exotic-animal-broker Tonia Haddix, who refers to herself as the “Dolly Parton of chimps,” spends her days caring for animals in captivity. However, her limitless love for one chimpanzee spins into a wild cat-and-mouse game with authorities and an animal rights group."
It continues:
"Through the experiences of Tonia and other “chimp moms,” Chimp Crazy reveals the bonds between owners and their highly intelligent great ape pets, the risks humans take when they raise these animals as members of their family, and the risks to the welfare of the animals themselves."
Eric Goode, the writer and director of Chimp Crazy Season 1, also directed the Tiger King series, which is currently streaming on Netflix. For those unfamiliar, the documentary series dives into the life of zookeeper and convicted felon Joe Exotic, who was accused of abusing wild animals, specifically tigers.
Even though the first season of the show received a huge response from the audience, its second and third seasons were not as well received. If Season 1 of Chimp Crazy does well with audiences, there is a possibility that it could continue as a series.
