Former LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling’s controversy continues with Clipped episode 5, which will be available for streaming next Tuesday, June 25. The 6-part docu-series is based on the ESPN podcast The Sterling Affairs. It charts Sterling’s downfall after he was caught on tape and exposed for his derogatory racial remarks.

The show continues to dramatize the notorious 2014 Donald Sterling scandal in the first three episodes. Episode 4 of Clipped, however, stepped away from the unfolding drama of the just-leaked audio from episode 3. Instead, it dove into the lives of Doc Rivers, V. Stiviano, and Shelly Sterling before they got embroiled in the Sterling controversy.

The upcoming episode, titled The Best Words, on the other hand, is anticipated to unleash the drama of Sterling’s downfall as he’s forced to face the consequences of his actions.

Brief recap: Clipped episode 4

Episode 4, titled “Winning Ugly,” took a pause from the ongoing scandal, offering a flashback into the lives of Clipped's pivotal characters.

The episode particularly sheds light on the tension that was already brewing in Donald Sterling’s life, particularly in his marriage life and professional life as the Clippers owner.

A flashback to 2006 showed his marriage to Shelly tested with his infidelity and discriminatory character. He was being sued by both his ex-mistress and the tenants for discrimination. Amid the piling discrimination scandals and cases, third parties, and public embarrassment, Shelly was seen kicking Donald out of their beach house.

Another flashback to 2008 brought a key personality in the team’s history: former Clippers general manager Elgin Baylor. It shed light on Baylor’s lawsuit against Donald and the NBA—Donald for “wrongful termination” and the then-NBA Commissioner David Stern for giving Donald too many passes for his history of racist remarks and lewd activities.

Clippers coach Doc Rivers’ earlier run-in with Donald was implied in a flashback during the year when he was a basketball player on Donald’s team. Rivers was already aware of Donald’s racism and discrimination at the time, which made him question why he should continue to play for a team owned by such a man. It mirrors the same conflict that the Clippers faced following Donald’s TMZ leak in Clipped episode 3, where they were thinking of boycotting a game.

The latest episode also highlighted V. Stiviano’s life before she was cast into the spotlight and Sterling’s life. Bringing back her life in 2004, episode 4 chronicled her story from single-handedly running a food truck in LA while trying to make ends meet and pursuing her dreams of becoming a reality TV star to meeting Deja, who takes her into the other side of the fence where she could meet influential people and actively work towards her dreams.

What to expect in Clipped episode 5

With the flashback of the show’s key players done and dusted, things are anticipated to get messier for Donald Sterling in Clipped episode 5, titled “The Best Words,” as his leaked audio clip receives further heat. Doc Rivers and the Clippers’ fate in the league would be shaken up by the social controversy their owner is getting.

Meanwhile, V. Stiviano is expected to get the spotlight she’s been dreaming of and courting as she steps out in the media to share her version of the story with Barbara Walters.

The official Clipped episode 5 synopsis reads:

"V. tries to explain herself to Barbara Walters; Doc finds himself doing everybody’s job; the Sterlings face consequences."

Previous episodes of the FX sports drama based on a true story are now streaming on Hulu, ahead of the release of Clipped episode 5 next Tuesday.
