Cobra Kai is back with the first part of its three-part sixth season. The show is set to end this season and will feature the merged group of Eagle Fang and Miyagi-Do students preparing to go to the Sekai Taikai. It is the most coveted Karate event in the Karate Kid universe. This season's first part exclusively focused on the preparations for the same in the first five episodes.
This season may have lacked the incredible storytelling of the last few seasons, especially as many things seemed to drag on beyond reason. However, it still had a solid direction and many big developments in the first part itself.
The primary focus of Cobra Kai season 6 seemed to rest on the selection of the students who go to the Sekai Taikai, as well as the selection of the captains (men and women, separately) who would represent the team and play in the finals.
The final episode of the show saw the four best students fight out a battle to determine who would take on the captain's band. The four players include Robbie (Tanner Buchanan), Miguel (Xolo Maridueña), Samantha (Mary Mouser), and Tory (Peyton List). However, it ends in tragedy as Tory walks out of the fight. Yet, Tory does return to Sekai Taikai, just not in the way fans would have wanted her to.
Cobra Kai season 6 part 1 ending: Old rivalries flare up ahead of the decisive moment
This season of Cobra Kai was relatively calm for most of the people involved, with Robbie and Miguel getting along, and Sam and Tory bonding over their mistakes from the past. However, all of it seemed to fall apart in the sixth episode, once the question of who the captains would be arose.
To determine this, Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) decided to make their best pairs fight for the spot. While Johnny refereed Sam and Tory's fight, Daniel refereed Robbie and Miguel's fight.
Miguel and Robbie's fight goes rather straightforward, with Robbie taking the upper hand and eventually winning after Miguel seemed set for a victory. However, the boys take it rather sportingly, and Robbie is crowned the captain of the men's team.
A bigger issue arises when Tory and Sam fight, with the former going through a life-altering event, which is depicted at the beginning of the episode.
Though the fight does not reach its completion, it kickstarts the fire between LaRusso and Lawrence once again, with the former punching the latter for talking about Mr. Miyagi. The duo decided to part ways after the tournament.
What is wrong with Tory?
From the beginning of the finale of Cobra Kai season 6 part 1, Tory's life has been a key focus. As it progresses, it is revealed that her mother is in the hospital, going through another overdose. This messes up Tory's mind, who initially considers not turning up for the fight, but ultimately does as her only way of letting it all out.
However, as the fight begins, Sam realizes quite soon that there is something wrong with Tory, as she seems to be not only punching above her weight but is also not holding back with her strikes, dealing hard blows on Samantha, much to the concern of her parents. It is then revealed that Tory's mother is dead.
Obviously, the death of her mother affects her, and it does not help when Daniel and his wife try to stop the fight, telling Tory that she is not in a state to fight.
Johnny, however, having gone through something similar, understands Tory and wants her to fight if she is willing.
Why does Tory leave? The Kreese connection and the Cobra Kai return
When Daniel and Johnny argue over whether the fight should go on, Tory ultimately leaves because she recalls what John Kreese (Maritn Kove) had said to her earlier. She tells Amanda that when push comes to shove, they will always choose their daughter, which is exactly what Kreese had told her in the parking lot.
This causes her to ultimately sever ties with the group and walk away.
But that is not the last we are seeing of Tory. In fact, as a final twist, Tory does appear at the Sekai Taikai, but as a part of John Kreese's Cobra Kai, who had also qualified for the tournament under Terry Silver in season 5.
This was also a strategic move from Kreese to rile up Tory as he had already revealed that he did not have a female champion. But with Tory on their side, they will now have a better chance at the women's title.
The upcoming two parts of Cobra Kai season 6 will cover this in more detail.
