Cobra Kai season 6 part 1 recap: Everything you need to know before part 2 arrives

Cobra Kai season 6 part 1, consisting of five episodes, premiered on Netflix on July 18, 2024. The show's sixth and final season is split into three parts, with part 2 set to release on November 15, 2024, and part 3 scheduled for a 2025 release.

Created by Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg, the martial arts comedy series first premiered on YouTube Red/Premium in May 2018. Following the show's success, it was picked up by Netflix for season 3.

Daniel and Johnny's friendship reaches a breaking point in Cobra Kai season 6 part 1

Cobra Kai season 6 part 1 begins with Johnny and Daniel continuing to clash over their different teaching methods, and the former, at last, comes around to naming their combined dojo Miyagi-Do.

As they prepare for the Sekai Taikai tournament, the two men disagree over whether to include Devon Lee in the final line-up. While Johnny is all for it, Daniel feels otherwise.

Then, they decide to consult Mike Barnes for his objective opinion. But, Mike challenges the members of Miyagi-Do and eventually decides against Devon. However, Johnny insists she gets another chance to make the cut, against Daniel's wishes.

Things quickly take a turn for the worse after Johnny seemingly insults Daniel's mentor, Mr. Miyagi, in a heated moment. Subsequently, Daniel attacks him in return, leading them to decide to end their friendship for good after the Sekai Taikai tournament.

Tory betrays Miyagi-Do to join John Kreese's Cobra Kai

After reconciling in season 5, Tory and Robby start Cobra Kai season 6 part 1 as a couple. She also buries the hatchet with Sam, following years of rivalry. But, her life turns upside down after her mother, Grace, dies of pulmonary embolism in the finale episode of part 1.

Grief-stricken, Tory channels her anger at winning against Sam in a battle to become the female captain of Miyagi-Do for the Sekai Taikai tournament.

But before she can do any real harm to Sam, Daniel intervenes. Johnny, however, feels Tory is justified in wanting to blow off steam. Feeling frustrated and misunderstood by her Miyagi-Do clan, Tory decides to switch sides. She joins John Kreese's Cobra Kai dojo under Kim Da-eun in a shocking act of betrayal.

Tory is next seen, dressed in all black, as a member of the rival team ready to face off against her former Miyagi-Do friends and senseis at the end of Cobra Kai season 6 part 1.

Miguel, Demetri, and Hawk head towards an uncertain future

Miguel begins Cobra Kai season 6 part 1 on good terms with Robby. Also, his relationship with girlfriend Samantha is thriving.

Miguel's long-held dream of studying at Stanford is put on hold as he gets deferred by the university. He feels that winning the Sekai Taikai as a captain will improve his chances of getting in. However, he is forced to consider other options after realizing his family can't afford the high tuition fees.

Meanwhile, best friends Demetri and Hawk drift apart after Hawk changes his mind about going to M.I.T. together. Their friendship is further strained after Demetri beats Hawk in Mike Barnes' contest to decide who qualifies to go to Spain for the Sekai Taikai.

Mr. Miyagi's mysterious past is unveiled in Cobra Kai season 6 part 1

While arranging for Chozen's stay at Mr. Miyagi's dojo, Daniel, Amanda, and Chozen find a hidden box that reveals surprising secrets about Miyagi's past. The box contains a passport and newspaper clippings detailing Mr. Miyagi's involvement in robbery and assault as a young man.

They also learn that Miyagi co-owned a boxing gym before fleeing to China in 1947 due to his criminal record.

Cobra Kai season 6 part 1 sets the stage for further revelations about Miyagi's mysterious past in the season's part 2. It will also showcase Daniel's struggle to come to terms with his mentor's less-than-ideal history.
