Creature Commandos episode 5 ending explained: Is Rick Flag Sr. dead?

Creature Commandos episode 5, The Iron Pot, premiered on Max on December 26, 2024. The episode kicked off the second half of the series and focuses on the titular group going back to Pokolistan to kill Princess Ilana Rostovic as she may be responsible for World War III in the future. Back in America, Rick Flag Sr. and Eric Frankenstein team up for a mission.

At the end of Creature Commandos episode 5, Rick Flag Sr. gets injured massively by Clayface. While his fate is left ambiguous, Flag passes out which may leave some viewers thinking that the character may have died. However, it doesn't exactly seem to be the case as Flag Sr. is still set to have a future in the DCU and he will surely be back later in the show.

In Creature Commandos episode 5, Eric Frankenstein teams up with Rick Flag Sr. to save Princess Ilana Rostovic. They first start by investigating Professor McPherson who is an expert on Themyscira, however, when they spy on her teaching one of her classes, they soon learn that she doesn't know much about the place and decide to investigate her home.

They then break into her house only to find that the real Professor McPherson is dead and there is a doppelganger in her place. He quickly notifies Rostovic about this as well. Flag then hears a car pull up in a drive away and the doppelganger enters the house and starts gaming in the living room. However, the doppelganger is soon revealed to be the shapeshifting Batman villain known as Clayface.

Clayface soon realizes that someone is sneaking up on him and he starts beating up Flag Sr. and Frankenstein. Clayface brutalizes Flag Sr. by breaking his back, however, Frankenstein is able to get an upper hand on him by electrocuting him and defeating him. However, Flag, who is beaten up badly, tells Eric to warn the Bride about what has happened and not go forward with the mission. He then passes out.

While Creature Commandos episode 5 makes it look like Rick Flag Sr. might have died, they certainly can expect to see him pop up again in the show soon. Frank Grillo is set to reprise his role in Superman and Peacemaker season 2, so this certainly isn't the last fans have seen of him.

Creature Commandos start getting hunted in Pokolistan

After reaching Pokolistan, the Creature Commandos are greeted by Alexei and the army. While Alexei asks exactly why the group is back in the city, they explain that another threat has been made to the Princess' life and they need to save her again. However, Flag calls up Ilana and warns her about what will happen.

Alexei is made aware of the situation too and he takes the group to a secure place where they're ambushed by the Pokolistan military. The military starts attacking the group but the Creature Commandos are successfully able to escape them After learning this, Princess Rostovic orders the death of the Commandos.

Eric Frankenstein's backstory is explored

Creature Commandos episode 5 also dives deep into the backstory of Eric Frankenstein following the aftermath of him killing Victor and the Bride burning him. Eric falls into a river and washes up ashore where an old and blind woman called Bogdana finds him. She uses her dog to drag him back to her place and treats his burn wounds.

Bogdana then nurses back Frankenstein to health and the two live happily together with her forming a maternal bond with him. While Frankenstein finds to care about someone naturally, his heart still lies with the Bride. He then decides to abandon Bogdana in pursuit of the Bride and kills her before setting off.
