Max has officially confirmed Creature Commandos season 2. The adult-animated TV series is a part of James Gunn's revamped DC Universe, and the renewal comes before the first season's full release. The season 1 finale is set to air on Thursday, January 9, 2025.

Creature Commandos premiered on Max on December 5, 2024. The superhero series is based on DC Comics's black ops team of the same name, assembled by Amanda Waller. Season 1 introduces characters like Eric Frankenstein, Rick Flag Sr., Nina Mazursky, G.I. Robot, Doctor Phosphorus, and Weasel. The series blends action, dark humor, and lesser-known DC lore.

Creature Commandos season 2 is expected to advance the story, as the show is the first installment in DC Universe's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. It will also bring together animated projects with live-action, with characters set to appear across both formats.

Max announced Creature Commandos season 2

As stated above, Max renewed Creature Commandos season 2 before the fifth episode premiere of season 1. The streaming platform made the news official on December 23, 2024. In a statement released on the same day by Warner Bros. Discovery, Gunn and DC Studios co-chairman Peter Safran said,

“We’re thrilled to team up with Max for another season of Creature Commandos mayhem. From our spectacular first season of Peacemaker to the astonishing run of The Penguin to the record-breaking launch of Creature Commandos, Max has consistently delivered above industry expectations and beyond our wildest imaginings.

They added,

Thank you, Casey, Sarah, Pia, Sono and the entire team for your tremendous support of DC Studios. We are proud to call Max home.”

As the first season has not concluded yet, there is no official confirmation regarding the release date and returning cast members for Creature Commandos season 2. While specific plot details remain under wraps, Gunn's storytelling approach indicates that season 2 will deepen the characters' connections to the larger DCU.

The Creature Commandos first appeared in the DC Comics as part of Weird War Tales #93 (November 1980). Created by J.M. DeMatteis and Pat Broderick, the team was introduced as a group of monstrous soldiers fighting during World War II.

Creature Commandos have been reimagined and reintroduced in different iterations of the DC Universe, like the Flashpoint timeline and The New 52 reboot. The characters were initially created to resemble classic movie monsters and were repurposed as heroes in military missions over time.

The executive producers of the Creature Commandos TV series are James Gunn, Peter Safran, Sam Register, and Dean Lorey, while Rick Morales acts as the supervising producer.

The official logline of the season 1 reads,

"Creature Commandos tracks a secret team of incarcerated monsters recruited for missions deemed too dangerous for humans. When all else fails… they’re your last, worst option."

In the four episodes released so far, Amanda Waller assembles 'Task Force M,' a team of non-human criminals, to stop the sorceress Circe from taking over the nation of Pokolistan. Fans get an introduction to the past of different members, like the Bride, G.I. Robot, and Weasel. Episode 4 saw the beginning of an unusual alliance between Eric and General Rick Flag Sr.

Season 1 features an ensemble voice cast including Indira Varma, Sean Gunn, Steve Agee, Maria Bakalova, Alan Tudyk, Zoë Chao, David Harbour, and Frank Grillo.

The Executive Vice President of HBO & Max Comedy Programming, Amy Gravitt, said the following on the audience reception for season 1:

“Only James Gunn could have conjured this wild band of misfit monsters who tug at your heart and force you to root passionately for them. We couldn’t be more delighted to continue their stories with James, Dean Lorey, Peter Safran and our fantastic partners at DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation.”
