Given the amount of positive reception the series garnered around the world, there’s no wonder why Dark Matter season 2 has become a highly anticipated sequel. The series had a good run and remained at the top of the charts of Apple TV, and the credits go to its mind-bending storyline, fascinating cast, and a never-ending stream of fan theories.
Based on the odd episode count, there was even speculation among fans about if there would be a tenth episode, but season 1 was slated for a 9-episode run and concluded on July 26, 2024.
Nevertheless, with season 1 concluding with an open-ended finale, Dark Matter season 2 might just be a possibility, which even Blake Crouch and Joel Edgerton have discussed in their recent interview. Follow along with the article to learn more.

What do Edgerton and Crouch have have to say about Dark Matter season 2
Speaking to Screenrant, Blake Crouch, the creator of Dark Matter, and Joel Edgerton, the actor who portrayed Jason Dessen, talked about the series' conclusion and the possibilities of storyline extension. As unveiled by Crouch, the series entirely adapted the novel, and there is no source material left for Dark Matter season 2.

Here’s what Crouch had to say:
Obviously we know these characters really well by now. And yeah, there's a little bit of an open-endedness [and] you've read my novels — there's always an open-endedness in my novels. I want the reader to continue the journey in their own mind.
He further explained there’s nothing left from the original book for Dark Matter season 2:
As for a season 2, I think we have to let the series play out [and] we have to see where things stand and just do a gut check. See if there's an appetite for that. But right now, I think we're just really excited to let everyone finish this first season, which is just the book. We didn't leave anything out. We didn't hold anything back for a season 2. Everything in the book that we loved is in this season.

Joel Edgerton, who also joined the interview, explained how there are many possibilities for Dark Matter season 2 to be commissioned right away:
There are almost too many possibilities. When you're dealing with a contraption like the box, or if you're talking about a show that deals with time travel, it's almost like there's too many possibilities. The question is what is the best direction to move in? The great thing is, Blake is not somebody who just had one novel in him.

Edgerton further continued with how the continuation of the storyline depends on Crouch:
Obviously, he's written many, many great speculative science fiction novels. He's got an incredible, creative, elastic brain. And I know that he's already thinking about it. So the moment there's any word to say, "Let's do it," he'll be in the science lab, tinkering away, working out what it is, and I guarantee he'll be inviting people like myself into that process.
He concluded by stating that Dark Matter season 2 might get green-lit “if the appetite is there:”
It's a whole undiscovered land now, because in the first season, he was working off the novel, and there's the terror and the excitement of looking into an open space or [a] blank page as to what could be next. So the short answer is I think everyone had such a great time that we'll absolutely do more if the appetite is there, and it seems like the show's done very well.
Why there should be Dark Matter season 2
With how the series ended and the huge list of plot holes that remain unresolved, including the fate of certain characters and their versions from other realities, Dark Matter season 2 would be a necessary addition. The series has even left fans wondering about which reality Jason 1, Daniella, and Charlie chose, unleashing an ocean of fan theories with no definite answer.

Additionally, the finale also saw Amanda (from Jason 2’s universe) being approached by Ryan (possibly from Jason 1’s universe), who proclaimed to know her very well, even though the two characters never really crossed each other’s path. As there are lot of questions that need their answers, Dark Matter season 2 would be a justified continuation of the series.
