How was Mark Weinberger arrested?
Popularly known as The Nose Doctor in the Florida area, Mark Weinberger was a prominent surgeon and specialist before his legal troubles began growing. According to NBC Chicago, Weinberger became the center of all media attention in the county as he fled from the law enforcement agencies in 2004.
Weinberger had been visiting the Greek Island of Mykonos with his wife, Michelle Kramer, and her mother and friends, to celebrate Kramer's 30th birthday when she woke up one morning on their 79ft powerboat to find Mark missing with his passport and the money he had stashed for himself, per The Guardian.
Weinberger stayed on the run for five years before he was turned in by his Italian girlfriend, Monica, in December 2009. Monica was alerted by a special feature focused on Weinberger on America’s Most Wanted. Weinberger left Michelle $6 million in debt while over 350 of his patients sued him for medical malpractice.
He tried to escape all charges and capture by fleeing to Europe where he was eventually arrested from Mont Blanc. He was extradited from Europe after which he faced 22 charges of healthcare fraud in the United States of America to which he pleaded guilty in 2012, per ABC News. The patients who filed lawsuits against Weinberger received shares of the $55 million medical malpractice settlement in 2013, per NBC Chicago.
Weinberger billed insurance companies on false grounds to extort money and performed unnecessary medical procedures on his patients. He was subsequently sentenced to 84 months in prison including time served. However, he was released early and he served five years in total.
The WMAQ-Ch. 5 news anchor, Rob Stafford, mentioned on Dateline,
"We did some searching online, and we’re surprised to find Mark Weinberger is still calling himself a doctor — sort of, anyway. He’s now ‘Yoga Doc,’ selling classes to turn you from a nerd to a ninja, from a zero to a superhero.”
Episode 46 of season 29 of Dateline: Secrets Uncovered sheds light on the extent of extortion that Mark Weinberger subjected insurance companies and innocent patients to. He was released in 2014 to a halfway house and he settled down with an Illinois resident after five years, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Mark Weinberger's medical license was revoked in 2005, per NBC Chicago.
