The premiere of the new Dateline series, The Smoking Gun, is set to cover the horrific murder of Kim Dorsey in 2012. Kim's husband, Derrick, had returned from a 24-hour shift to find his wife brutally beaten on the bedroom floor of their Eastbury Drive home.
As the investigations progressed, authorities found that Kim had been s*xually assaulted as well and the DNA retrieved from her led them to the perpetrator - Lance Kirkpatrick. Lance broke a pool cue over Kim and slit her throat in a fit of rage.
The upcoming Dateline: The Smoking Gun episode, titled In Cold Blood, showcases the horrific murder of Kim Dorsey as it airs on Thursday, October 3, 2024, on Oxygen at 8 pm EST. The official synopsis of the episode reads:

Kim Dorsey owned a construction company
Kim Marie Dunne Dorsey was born on October 10, 1974, to parents Dennis Dunne and Sally Anne Berent Dunne. She was a stellar student who graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of North Florida. After that, she started her own Construction Company and worked as a Certified General Contractor.
Alongside, Kim also held the position of the Director of Training for the Quality Assurance Department of Inspection Depot. Kim Dorsey was married to Derrick Dorsey, Engineer/Paramedic with the Jacksonville Fire/Rescue Department, with whom she shared three children - Dexter, Gracie, and Duncan.
Kim loved animals and her best friend was her pet Miniature Snauzers.
What happened to Kim Dorsey?
According to The Florida Times-Union, Kim Dorsey was found murdered on the bathroom floor of her 3617 Eastbury Drive residence on October 28, 2012. She was found lying in lying in a pool of her blood by her husband, Derrick, after a 24-hour shift at his workplace.
Kim's body was tied up with zip ties and her body was found brutally battered. Her eyes were full of blood, depicting the extent of the torture and the state of her stiffened body showed that she had been killed the day before as rigor mortis had already set in.
The autopsy report confirmed that she had been r*ped before the murder and the DNA found inside her led the investigators to Lance Kirkpatrick. Per court documents, Kirkpatrick had broken into the house to steal a valuable to pay off a drug debt but was confronted by Kim who had been home alone.
Kim and Derrick had reportedly let Lance, Derrick's friend, live with them briefly during a difficult time when he had allegedly shared a physical relationship with Kim. As Kim and Lance fell out over previous issues of infidelity and other allegations, the argument escalated and led to Lance killing Kim.
