The murder of Kim Dorsey brought a story of cold-blooded murder at the hands of Lance Kirkpatrick to the forefront. The focus of the new Dateline episode, Kim Dorsey was found dead in her Eastbury Drive bedroom in October 2012. The DNA found in her genital tract led the detectives to Kirkpatrick who s*xually assaulted her and then beat her to death with a pool cue before he slit her throat with a kitchen knife.

Why was Lance Kirkpatrick arrested?

On October 28, 2012, Kim Dorsey was found lying in a pool of blood on the bedroom floor by her husband, Derrick Dorsey. Derrick, a Jacksonville firefighter and paramedic, had returned home from a 24-hour shift at his workplace and found his wife's body brutally beaten and in an advanced stage of rigor mortis.

According to The Florida Times-Union, Kim was found with evidence of s*xual activity before her murder and the DNA evidence pointed to Derrick's friend, Lance Kirkpatrick. The Dorseys had reportedly let the ex-military man stay with them and offered work in Kim's construction business after he was kicked out having failed a drug test.

Kim Dorsey was found beaten, bludgeoned, and with her throat slit with a kitchen knife.


Where is Lance Kirkpatrick now? Details explored

The authorities had arrested the 31-year-old Lance Kirkpatrick based on the confession and the DNA evidence from Kim Dorsey's body. According to court documents, he was charged with first-degree murder, burglary of a dwelling with an assault or battery, and s*xual battery with a deadly weapon or great physical force.

During his hearing, the defense tried to establish that Kim had allegedly lured Lance into bed before she confronted him with allegations of introducing Derrick to other women. During the heated exchange, Kim had allegedly fired a gun at Lance when he found the pool cue in the kitchen and retaliated in self-defense leading to her losing consciousness.

Lance allegedly bound her and then tried to free her with a knife when she regained consciousness and struggled to set herself free. The defense argued that he ended up stabbing her during the struggle. However, the prosecution pointed out the home invasion for drug money and his knowledge of the location of the Dorseys' spare key.

Lance was found guilty of first-degree murder, burglary of a dwelling, and s*xual battery and sentenced to three consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole, according to The Florida Times-Union. Lance Kirkpatrick is presently serving his time at the Blackwater River Correctional Facility, per the Florida Department of Corrections.
