The mysterious death of Larry Isenberg shocked the law enforcement agencies of Idaho as they received a 911 call mentioning that he had fallen into the Lake Coeur d’Alene. The 68-year-old retired forester had visited the area with his wife, Lori Isenberg, when she reported that he had fallen aboard during their sunrise cruise.

However, the initial investigations indicated foul play by Lori and the discovery of his body from the bottom of the Lake confirmed the fact that he had been murdered. The autopsy results showed that he had died from diphenhydramine toxicity from an overdose of Benadryl.

The Dateline: Unforgettable episode titled Kill Switch showcases Larry Isenberg's murder as it airs on August 1, 2024, at 8 p.m. ET on Oxygen. The official synopsis reads,

"Keith Morrison revisits a story where he says unusual would be putting it mildly; at first it appeared to be a drowning accident during a romantic sunset cruise; but soon Idaho investigators suspected something more sinister."

How did Larry Isenberg die?

On February 13, 2018, the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from Lori Isenberg where she reported that her husband, Larry, had fallen aboard their sunrise cruise in Lake Coeur d’Alene at Powderhorn Bay. According to Oxygen, the recorded 911 call obtained by Snapped had Lori share,

“I need help. I’m on the lake but I don’t know where. My husband has had a stroke and he fell over ... I tried to grab him, I tripped and I ... I can’t find him, he fell overboard.”

The first responders at the crime scene found Lori Isenberg with a bloody nose with no sign of Larry around. The rescue teams went out looking for Larry in the Lake but to no avail. The authorities suspected that Larry had either drowned or succumbed to hypothermia in the water at 38 degrees.

Lori had allegedly fanned out the Lake before she discovered Larry's cell phone on board and made the 911 call from it two hours after the incident. Despite an extensive manhunt, Larry could not be located and his wife gave out her statement to the authorities.

In a turn of events, Larry Isenberg's body resurfaced from the Lake on March 1 in the area of Sun Up Bay near Worley, Idaho, according to CBS affiliate KREM. The report mentioned that he was found floating face down in the water and the coroner's office identified the body as that of Larry.

The autopsy report which arrived weeks later revealed a darker twist in the tale - Larry Isenberg's body contained 7,100 nanograms of diphenhydramine. The content of diphenhydramine, an antihistamine found in the composition of over-the-counter allergy medications, in Larry's body was 70 times more than the permissible dosage, per the Idaho Statesman.

Larry showed no signs of drowning and the investigators believed the incident to be a homicide when they discovered several discrepancies in Lori Isenberg's statement and alibi.

Episode 9 of Season 4 of Dateline: Unforgettable showcases the disappearance and subsequent investigation into Larry Isenberg's murder by Lori due to financial embezzlement. Lori Isenberg had been initially charged with fraud before she was charged with the murder of Larry Isenberg.
