The murder of the Detroit professional Jane Bashara took a complicated turn and ended with the conviction of her husband, Bob Bashara, in 2014. Robert "Bob" Bashara had been named a person of interest early on in the investigations and was soon found to have orchestrated her murder with the help of Joe Gentz.

Following Gentz's confession, Bob was arrested and subsequently found guilty of Jane's murder. He had been incarcerated at the Woodland Center Correctional Facility for life before he passed away in August 2020.

The Dateline: Unforgettable episode S*x, Lies & Murder chronicles the murder of Jane Bashara as it airs on June 27, 2024, at 8 p.m. EST on Investigation Discovery. The official synopsis reads,

"When a woman is found dead in her SUV, the investigation into her murder reveals a tangled web of s*x and lies. Dennis Murphy looks back on his unusual interview with the lead suspect."

How was Bob Bashara arrested?

Jane Bashara was married to Robert "Bob" Bashara for 26 years at the time of her death on January 25, 2012. She was found dead in her Mercedes-Benz ML350 in the early morning hours of January 26, six miles away from her home on Middlesex Road, per the New Haven Register.

While it was Bob Bashara who had reported Jane as the missing person to the Grosse Pointe Park Police Department, he offered an inconsistent alibi where he reportedly claimed to have spoken to Jane over the phone post-evening. However, ABC News reported that Jane Bashara's phone records contradicted the statement.

Bob was made to take a polygraph test on January 27, which he failed. He was named as a person of interest, and investigations into his involvement began. In a turn of events, an individual named Joe Gentz walked into the Grosse Pointe Park police station and confessed to killing Jane Bashara on January 31.

According to the Detroit Free Press, Bob Bashara had asked Joe Gentz to help him move boxes. Upon arrival, Gentz was caught in the middle of an argument between Jane and Bob when the latter threatened Joe to "shut her up" at gunpoint.

Where is Bob Bashara now?

Bob Bashara was charged with Jane Bashara's murder and arrested on June 27, 2012. According to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office, he was initially charged with one count of the following charges.

In addition to these charges, Bob pleaded guilty to solicitation to murder Joseph Gentz on October 11, 2012. The investigation involved 300 witnesses and seven states, including Michigan, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Florida, Oregon, and Texas.

Per the Detroit Free Press, Bob was found guilty of his charges in December 2014. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison with no parole on January 15, 2015. Bashara was incarcerated at the Woodland Center Correctional Facility in Whitmore Lake but had been moved to the Ann Arbor infirmary. He passed away on August 17, 2020, aged 62, per Grosse Pointe News.
