SEAL Team star and producer David Boreanaz got candid about why he wants to end his famous military flick with season 7.
Boreanaz joined Collider in a one-on-one interview, published on September 4, 2024, and explained the toll of playing Master Chief Jason Hayes on the series. He opened up about being done playing the character "physically and mentally," saying:
"I decided to end the show the way I wanted to end the show with the character. It was over for me. I knew that, and that's what I expressed to them. I was like, 'I'm done, both physically and mentally. It's very difficult to portray these types of emotions, day in day out, when you're shooting."
He further noted that, from an actor's perspective, playing the complex emotion of his character is impossible for him to imagine what it feels like for service members who are actually living it.
For the unversed, a lot of the storyline of David Boreanaz's Jason Hayes in SEAL Team Season 7 revolves around his traumatic brain injury. He suffers from headaches, memory loss, and difficulty focusing because of it, which has caused tension and distraction during the team's high-stakes missions.
In the interview, Boreanaz reiterated that he had clarified that season 7 would be his last. Whether the show continues for another season or not, the Bravo Team leader will sign off at the end of the seventh season.
Moreover, Boreanaz admitted that his body is "not moving like it used to" during an interview with People on August 9, 2024. He explained that he had four different MRIs in the past four months, saying "it's been quite a journey" for him.
David Boreanaz said that there's a possibility his character won't make it to SEAL Team Season 7 finale
During his one-on-one with Collider, David Boreanaz also teased possible storylines for his Jason Hayes character in the series finale. He explained that they want to bring authenticity to Hayes's character in SEAL Team Season 7. Hence, much of his storyline this season is an "intense dive" into how servicemen like him "deal with their first kill" and how it haunts them.
As for his future in the SEAL Team series finale, Boreanaz said that with Hayes, there's a possibility that he "may not make it." He explained:
"From my character's perspective, does he make it? I don't know. He may not make it. He may succumb to the battlefield. He may ultimately die on the field of the sword. That's on the plate for him."
Boreanaz also talked about the scene in the season 7 premiere of the military flick, where a new member saved Hayes from a bullet that could have killed him. He said that for Jason Hayes, survival is critical, but also is his healing. Jason may heal from his trauma, but "he also may get killed," Boreanaz explained.
He also mentioned that they are not shying away from the possibility of killing Hayes at the end of the series because he said it's "a strength and a sacrifice on the battlefield."
While David Boreanaz is saying farewell to SEAL Team after seven seasons, he's also working on other projects. There's one in particular, a TV series, that he's writing and could star in. While he kept the project details hushed, he told Collider that he recently spent time with some people who could share "insight into the storytelling" for his project.
