How did Raheel Ahmad die? Details explored

According to Business Insider, the 36-year-old Raheel Ahmad was reported missing by his family to the Alpharetta Police when he was nowhere to be found in the Atlanta suburb where he resided. Raheel had already left for Chicago to allegedly meet his to-be ex-wife, Sania Khan, and salvage their marriage.

The authorities in Alpharetta contacted the Chicago police to conduct a welfare check at the building in the 200 block of East Ohio Street. However, the Chicago Sun-Times reported that the officers arrived at the scene to hear a single gunshot wound and an audible groan.

The Chicago Police entered the apartment to find Sania Khan unresponsive at the entrance while Raheel was found in the bedroom with a gunshot wound with a 9mm Glock handgun in his hand. Ahmad had shot Khan in the back of the head and then shot himself.

Sania Khan had dried blood on her face and was declared dead at the crime scene. Raheel was taken to the Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead later. Authorities also found a suicide note in the bedroom.

Why did Raheel Ahmad kill Sania Khan?

According to a BBC report, Raheel Ahmad had been suffering from mental health issues for a while. The Business Insider report further stated that one of Sania's best friends, Grant Moore, shared that Ahmad would blame her, treat her poorly, and threaten to kill himself.

With her friends' encouragement and support, Sania Khan filed for divorce in December 2021 after Ahmad had attempted suicide and tried to throw Khan out of their 28th-story window. While Raheel was hospitalized for weeks at a stretch, Sania removed his name from the lease, changed the locks, and filed for a restraining order.

She also took to TikTok to share her experience as a South Asian immigrant navigating the stigma around divorce and received support for the same. She captioned one of her last social media posts saying,

“It’s painful to walk away from someone you once loved. But it is even more painful to love someone who is careless with your heart.”

Besides long-standing mental health issues, Sania Khan's close friends and family opened up about the domestic abuse she faced during her marriage to Raheel Ahmad.
