Desperate Lies season 1 ending explained: Did Liana reveal the truth?

The Brazilian drama series Desperate Lies which premiered on Netflix on July 5, 2024, has kept the audiences hooked from the first scene to the last shot. The show is about a benevolent lie that Liana had to tell her children Marcos and Mateus. However, in the season finale, she finally decided to come clean.

Liana, played by Juliana Peas, was drugged and assaulted by Oscar, a man she trusted. Liana was already married to Tomas and had just found out that he was having an affair.

So to forget her pain she went to a party, where Oscar took advantage of her. Liana couldn't prove what had happened to her, and Oscar always maintained the lie that everything between them was consensual.

Things took an unexpected turn when Liana got pregnant with the twins, but each of them belonged to a different father. Mateus was the biological son of Tomas and Marcos was fathered by Oscar. Liana resorted to some desperate lies to keep her children away from the harsh truth. Eventually, she revealed it to her sons.

How did Marcos react to the truth in Desperate Lies?

In the final episode of Desperate Lies, Marcos is heartbroken and devastated to find out about the truth of his birth. What made it worse was that both sons believed the lie that their mother had an affair with Oscar, while she was married to Tomas.

Tomas never accepted Marcos as his son and wanted to give him up for adoption. But Liana couldn't go through with this idea. Tomas later killed Oscar and served time in jail. Even after coming out of jail he never did anything for his family, instead decided to reveal the truth to further his political aspirations.

Liana finally realized that the truth must come out as the lies wouldn't protect her sons forever. She revealed everything about Tomas's cheating, Oscar's assault, her initial reluctance to birth Marcos, and why she had to hide the truth.

Marcos, Mateus, and Julia, who were also at the scene, were shocked. But Marcos was devastated to find out that he was born out of assault.

Liana comforted Marcos by repeatedly asserting her love for him. But he still felt like he shouldn't have existed. He and Mateus embraced Liana in a hug, recognizing their mother's incredible strength and resilience.

Marcos stopped Tomas from getting killed in Desperate Lies

Marcos slowly came to terms with the truth, as he understood his mother's and brother's love for him. Oscar's sister Debora, upon learning the truth felt ashamed and asked Liana for forgiveness. She also wanted to have an aunt-nephew relationship with Marcos, which he reluctantly accepted.

He went to meet Debora at her house and met his grandfather, Oscar's father. The old man was drinking and feeling angry because the same day Tomas, his son's murderer was getting married. But he expressed his happiness about knowing that Marcos was his grandson. Marcos noticed that his grandfather had a gun lying around, but didn't bother much about it.

However, he and Debora soon realized that Oscar's father was missing and so was the gun. He went to Tomas' wedding to take revenge but was stopped by Marcos at the right time. Marcos saved Tomas, not because he saw him as a father, but because he didn't want Mateus to lose his father.

What happened to Tomas in Desperate Lies?

Tomas thanked Marcos but didn't apologize for his ill-treatment, instead, he accused him of creating pain and distress in his life. This angered Mateus who decided to leave the wedding with Marcos.

Tomas asked him to stay as it would be important for his political image. This infuriated Mateus who made a speech in front of everyone about how despicable his father is and ended their relationship. Marcos showed the whole incident to Liana through his phone.

Liana shared her story about assault and superfecundation on social media and became a successful author. Her story influenced other victims of assault to share their stories. She even started a relationship with Dante, her children's teacher.

On the other hand, Tomas, not only lost his family but also lost his political career. He set Liana's house on fire, trying to kill all three of them, but was arrested and sent to jail. There he became a religious leader giving spiritual talks to the inmates.

Desperate Lies ends with a shot of Liana and Dante sitting in the yard, while Marcos, Mateus, and Julia are playing football behind them.
