The Menendez Brothers became the talk of the town once again following the release of Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story on Netflix. The show follows the real-life story of the Menendez Brothers who were arrested for murdering their parents in 1996. The series tells the story of their prosecution while also showcasing the trauma they had endured from their parents in the past.
One of the most shocking parts of the show was when one of the Menendez Brothers, Lyle Menendez, decided to play Girl I'm Gonna Miss You by Milli Vanilli at their parents' funerals.
With the show already receiving accusations that the events being portrayed in the series are inaccurate, many viewers thought that this scene might have been fiction too, but no, it did actually happen in real life.
The Menendez Brothers did play the Milli Vanilli song at their parents' funeral
Author Robert Rand, who covered the life of the Menendez Brothers quite extensively and even wrote the novel The Menendez Murders: The Shocking Untold Story of the Menéndez Family and the Killings that Stunned the Nation, confirmed this to be true on his X account.
In a post, Rand stated that the song Girl I'm Gonna Miss You by Milli Vanilli was indeed played during the memorial service of Jose and Kitty.
"The Milli Vanilli song 'Miss You was also played at the Directors Guild memorial service for Jose and Kitty, parents of the #MenendezBrothers, on August 25, 1989, 35 years ago this week," said Robert Rand via X.
However, why the song was played at the funeral continues to remain a mystery. Given that the meaning of the song translates to a ballad about the longing of an ex-lover, here's hoping that the reason behind it being played can be explained in the upcoming Netflix documentary that's based on the brothers as well.
However, Girl I'm Gonna Miss You isn't the only Milli Vanilli song featured in the series. The songs Blame It on the Rain and Girl You Know It's True were also featured in the series. Following their needle drops in the Menendez Brothers show, the songs received an uptick in streaming activity as well.
Erik Menendez speaks out against the inaccuracies in the show
Following the release of Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, the show and its showrunner Ryan Murphy received heavy criticism from viewers for some elements that were showcased in the show. Murphy in particular was criticized for making the relationship between the Menendez Brothers seem incestuous given that they were victims of s*xual assault at a very young age.
This led Erik Menendez to put out a statement, slamming Ryan Murphy and the show. In the statement, he highlighted how the show had undone years of progress in shedding light on childhood trauma, and called Murphy "naive". The statement was shared by his wife Tammi Menendez on her X account.
"I believed we had moved beyond the lies and ruinous character portrayals of Lyle, creating a caricature of Lyle rooted in horrible and blatant lies rampant in the show. I can only believe they were done so on purpose. It is with a heavy heart that I say, I believe Ryan Murphy cannot be this naive and inaccurate about the facts of our lives so as to do this without bad intent.”
Fans can currently stream the series on Netflix right now, with another documentary, titled The Menendez Brothers, set to hit the platform on October 7, 2024.
