What has happened in Disclaimer season 1 so far?

The series portrays events happening across several timelines through the generous use of lengthy flashback sequences. The main events concerning the plot start unfolding in Italy. Jonathan, the young son of Stephen and Nancy Brigstocke, goes to Italy for a trip with his girlfriend. The latter, however, has to leave soon when a family member dies.

Alone, Jonathan then meets a young Catherine, who is also in Italy with her 4-year-old son Nicholas. A whirlwind bond soon develops between the two as they engage in frequent s*xual acts in which Catherine finally has the opportunity to act on her pending fantasies and desires.

Catherine wants this to be a one-time fling, but Jonathan falls in love with her and decides to go to London with her. This alarms the married Catherine. Later, when Nicholas drifts into the sea, Jonathan swims across to him and saves him. However, he starts drowning in the process.

Catherine, aware of Jonathan’s struggle for life in the deep water, does not alert the lifeguards who have not noticed him yet. When they do, it is too late.

With Jonathan dead, Catherine thinks that her extramarital affair will forever remain a secret. However, the plot of Disclaimer season 1 is complicated by the fact that the photos of hers clicked by Jonathan fall into his mother’s hands.

Nancy, Jonathan’s grieving mother, pieces together the facts and writes a book called The Perfect Stranger in which she fictionally recreates what may have happened between her son and Catherine in Italy.

After Nancy’s death, Stephen publishes the book and sends copies of the same to Catherine, her husband, Robert, and her son, Nicholas. By the end of Disclaimer season 1 episode 4, Catherine’s secret is out, and Robert throws her out of the house.
