Episodes 3 and 4 of Disclaimer season 1 were released on Apple TV+ on October 18, 2024. Written and directed by Alfonso Cuarón, the latest episodes of the 7-episode series continue to deal with themes of love, guilt, betrayal, sexuality, grief, and revenge, among others.

By the end of episode 4 of Disclaimer season 1, it is clear that Catherine did have a hand in Jonathan’s death since she could see him struggling to stay afloat in the deep water, and chose not to alert the lifeguards who were near her. She also lied to the police, saying she had never met Jonathan before.

Apart from revealing this crucial piece of information, the latest episodes of the series also focus on the current mental status of Robert, Catherine’s husband. Further, through several flashback scenes, the viewers are given a vivid portrayal of the kind of misery Stephen has had to endure following Jonathan and then Nancy’s death.

Disclaimer season 1 episodes 3 & 4 ending: Why did Catherine want Jonathan dead

Episodes 3 and 4 continue the premiere’s trend of a non-linear narrative. Elaborate flashback sequences in the latest episodes recreate what had happened between a young Catherine and Jonathan in Italy some years ago.

Catherine approached Jonathan when she saw the latter clicking her pictures. Later, she shared a few drinks with him at the bar. During this interaction, Catherine seduced Jonathan by asking him to elaborate on his s*xual fantasies. She then invited him to her room.

As Nicholas, Catherine, and Robert’s 4-year-old son slept, she and Jonathan engaged in a prolonged s*xual act, in which Catherine was finally able to act on her pending fantasies and desires that she somehow could not engage in with her married husband.

The plot of Disclaimer season 1 is complicated by the fact that while this fling with Jonathan was a one-time affair for Catherine, he genuinely fell in love with her. Her plan was to indulge in this affair for only as long as she stayed in Italy but Jonathan, smitten by her, wanted to go with her to London.

Several close-up shots of Catherine’s face show that this new development alarmed her seriously since she was married to a man of considerable social status. Towards the end of episode 4, young Nicholas carelessly drifted into the sea from the beach, riding his flimsy boat.

Panicking, Catherine went into the water but the water was deep. Without a moment’s thought, Jonathan flung himself into the sea and prevented Nicholas from drifting away too far. Several lifeguards approached Nicholas and carried him to the shore safely. However, Jonathan was struggling to stay afloat by then, and the lifeguards had not noticed him.

Catherine, of course, knew that Jonathan was still in the sea, flailing his arms in a frantic attempt to stay afloat. However, she simply chose to ignore this. When the lifeguards finally noticed Jonathan and went for him, it was too late.

Thus, Jonathan’s death meant that Catherine’s extra-marital affair would never come out, or at least that is what she thought. Hence, she did not save him when she had the chance.

What does Robert do in episodes 3 & 4?

The Disclaimer season 1 premiere ended with Robert leaving the house after confronting Catherine about the photos he received from Stephen. Episode 3 begins with a drunk Robert driving away in a feverish frenzy, as Catherine keeps calling him.

In episodes 3 and 4 of Disclaimer season 1, Robert regrets choosing Catherine over his family years ago. He feels pangs of jealousy when he reads about Catherine and Jonathan’s coital act, depicted in a stylized manner in The Perfect Stranger.

He lets go of his mild manners and decides to take matters into his own hands. He starts by bringing Nicholas back into their apartment, something Catherine is opposed to. Further, he goes so far as to pack one of Catherine’s bags and send her out of the house.

By the end of episode 4 of Disclaimer season 1, Robert throws Catherine out of the house. He now wishes to bond more than ever with Nicholas, since he thinks the latter may have known about his mother’s affair all this while, and suspects that is the reason why things have never been good between the mother and son.

What is Stephen up to?

The new episodes of Disclaimer season 1 reveal the painful experiences Stephen Brigstocke has had to undergo following Jonathan’s death by drowning and Nancy’s death by cancer.

The premier explained how he stumbled upon the manuscript of The Perfect Stranger penned by Nancy. He then published it and sent copies to Catherine, Robert, and Nicholas. In the latest episodes, he is seen planning to write another book.

Episode 4 of Disclaimer season 1 shows that the subject of his new book is a teenage boy, and Stephen now wants to make a fake Facebook profile in this fictional character’s name. Is he trying to connect with Nicholas over Facebook? The next episodes of the series might answer that.

The next episode of the series will be released on October 25, 2024, on Apple TV+.
