For decades, people have been interested about the Menendez Brothers, Lyle and Erik. Recently, there has been a lot of media attention on them. With the release of The Menendez Brothers on October 7, 2024, and Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, released on September 19, 2024, a big deal is that the brothers got back together after being apart for more than 20 years.
Before being transferred to the same correctional facility in San Diego — they lived for a considerable period in several prisons. Ryan Murphy's show revisits the case involving the murder of José and Kitty Menendez's, the parents of Lyle and Erik, on August 20, 1989, by the two brothers.
One crucial issue regarding the brothers is whether they were sent to separate prisons following a guilty conviction. The brothers first stayed together following their 1996 life sentences without parole before getting separated.
Erik went to Folsom State Prison, while Lyle was dispatched to Mule Creek State Prison. Following almost twenty years apart, they reunited at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in 2018.
Erik claimed during the trial that his father had mistreated him physically, emotionally and s*xually over the years, which set off the horrible events. The defense case contended that the murders were in self-defense.
The prosecution claimed, however, that the brothers did it out of fear of losing their inheritance and pure greed. Erik and Lyle were declared guilty of first-degree murder in 1996 even though the first juries couldn't agree.
As stated in the series Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, the Menendez brothers are said to be closer than ever now that they are in the same prison, having gotten back together after years.
How was the relationship between the Menendez brothers?
Erik and Lyle Menendez have been in and out of prison together for 30 years. From 1996 to 2018, the Menendez Brothers were locked up in different prisons and never saw each other.
They wrote letters and chess moves and sent them through the mail. Messages sent between family members were also used sometimes. Their bond stayed strong even though they lived in different places.
Before Lyle was transferred to R.J. Donovan Correctional Facility in 2018, the brothers were housed in different sections and couldn't interact. They were placed in the same housing unit after months of being in the same facility but not seeing each other. After 22 years, the brothers cried and hugged for several minutes following their first meeting.
As the journalist, Robert Rand mentioned in an interview with ABC News:
"They just hugged each other for a few minutes without saying any words to each other. Then the prison officials let them spend an hour together in a room."
Things are back to normal between the Menendez Brothers now. For meals and exercise, they can see each other every day.
Closely following the case, journalist Robert Rand said that both brothers had long said that they wanted to be together again. It was heartwarming for both the brothers and their extended family to see them again in the same prison. They had been there for each other through it all.
During their time in prison, Lyle and Erik both got married. Lynne and Erik have been married for more than 14 years and 10 years, respectively. They have found some stability in their personal lives, even though it's difficult to keep relationships going while they are in jail. The men's wives have also been happy about their reunion and have helped them get used to prison life.
The Menendez Brothers' renewed closeness shows how strong their bond is, even though they were apart for years after the horrific events that had sent them to prison, but their relationship seems stronger than ever.
