Doctor Odyssey season 1 episode 3, titled Plastic Surgery Week, dropped on ABC on Thursday, October 10, 2024, bringing personal dramas and a more emotional turn of events. After three cruises, the latest episode also brought the first casualty to The Odyssey.
Previously, in the medical procedural drama, it was "Singles Week" at the luxury cruise ship. Single men and women arrived, bringing with them some charm, including Captain Massey. However, it was a tense week for the medical team as they addressed several medical emergencies: Captain Massey's broken heart syndrome, a brawl in a hot tub, a woman overdosing on diuretics, and an std epidemic.
Singles Week, however, ended up with good news for Nurse Avery. She found out that there was a chance that she could earn her MD through one of the scholarships the ship offers. Onto Plastic Surgery Week, the new episode teased a more emotional week for the rest of the medical team. The human Ken, who Doctor Max idolized, died in his sleep while on the luxury cruise ship, making him Doctor Odyssey's first casualty.

Doctor Odyssey season 1 episode 3 sees the human Ken die
The Odyssey's Plastic Surgery Week gets a high-profile guest—Justin Jedlica, the social media star known as the "Human Ken." He and Max had developed a friendship while aboard the luxury cruise ship. They talked about many things, including Doctor Max's being in awe of the Human Ken's dedication to playing the character, over cryotherapy.
Human Ken, like other plastic surgery guests, also had a one-on-one with the doctor at the medical bay with concerns about his procedure. He divulges his fear of contracting fatal sepsis because of the amount of procedures he's done already. After some sweet moments with Max, Human Ken passes away in his sleep during his first night on the cruise ship. He's the first casualty in Doctor Odyssey season 1.
When room service arrives in his suite, they find him unresponsive. Doctor Max, with Nurses Avery and Tristan, hightails it to Human Ken's room, with the doctor trying to revive him. At some point, he suggests that they intubate him, but the nurses confirm that Human Ken is already dead.
They haul his body to the flower shop, aka the morgue, aboard a room service cart to keep his death secret from the rest of the passengers and to avoid ruining the ship's dreamy vibe. Max, however, is not happy that he couldn't do much for Human Ken—he couldn't revive him, and he couldn't give him a much better temporary resting space than a flower shop.
Later, Max reveals his connection to Human Ken to Nurse Avery—he binged Human Ken's TV show while he was at the hospital, fighting for his life after contracting COVID. The heart-to-heart ended with Max and Avery in a makeout session, or possibly more.
Max also opens up about how Human Ken and his friends helped him while he was alone and suffering at the hospital to Human Ken's next of kin at the end of Doctor Odyssey Season 1 Episode 3.
Nurse Tristan's mom learns that she's dying
Besides the human Ken doll, The Odyssey also had another surprising guest in Doctor Odyssey season 1 episode 3—Nurse Tristan's mother, Caroline. Her presence didn't only add to the ship's plastic surgery drama but also gave a little bit of Tristan's backstory and some emotional scenes from the nurse.
She arrives on the ship in high spirits, calling Nurse Tristan "My Pom Pom" and "My Tri Tri," which amuses Doctor Max to no end. Nurse Tristan, on the other hand, looks shocked by her presence, and their early encounter teased a deeper story between the mother and son duo. At Caroline's suite, while Tristan is draining some sort of liquid from her facelift, it is revealed that the two have not seen each other for two years.
Fast forward to them sharing a meal together, Calorine invites Tristan to an excursion, which the nurse declines, telling his mom that he's not on vacation at The Odyssey like her. He also confronts his mother for "love-bombing" him and blames her for her hang-ups. At this point, it's pretty obvious that Nurse Tristan has some deep-rooted abandonment and mommy issues.
As Caroline walks out after their heated conversation, she faints and falls to the floor. She is later diagnosed with Huntington's disease, and Tristan tells her that she has about 10 years to live. The two seemingly make peace with each other, with his mom promising to spend the next 10 years of her life making up for lost time.
However, at the near end of The Odyssey season 1 episode 3, Nurse Tristan is seen waiting at a beachside restaurant for his mom. She promised that they would share lunch but didn't arrive. As Plastic Surgery Week ends, Tristan also reveals that her mom had gotten a flight home without even saying goodbye.
The nurse is bummed because he thinks that it would be different this time, that she would do what she promised. However, he is still having false hope as far as his mother is concerned, and her dying wouldn't change it.
Nurse Avery gets a scholarship recommendation in Doctor Odyssey season 1 episode 3
Early in Doctor Odyssey season 1 episode 3, Nurse Avery makes it known that she hates working during Plastic Surgery Week. She hates the very idea of plastic surgery, and she hates the woman who instigates it—the ship's owner's wife, Lenore.
Nurse Avery gets herself fired after mouthing off to Lenore, but she still has to finish the job while she's still aboard the ship. The nurse is oddly okay with losing her job. However, when Lenore's personal shopper, whom she considers family, needs a medical emergency—an incredibly delicate operation at the ship, Nurse Avery volunteers, saying that she could do it. She also suggests a series of procedures that can help preserve the personal shopper's "b**b job," which is unlike her.
The procedure was a success, and Lenore gave her a thumbs up. Later, after the little operation and as the guests leave the ship at the end of Doctor Odyssey episode 3, Lenore tells Nurse Avery that she's not really fired from her job. She even has a scholarship recommendation to get her MD from her, which Lenore claims "counts."
