Doctor Odyssey season 1 episode 4, titled "Wellness Week," dropped on ABC on Thursday, October 17, 2024. The new episode brings more challenges for the crew as the cruise ship is flooded with sick patients, including one of their own, while it sails in the middle of the hurricane.

The rough waters made Dr. Max and Nurse Tristan's job complicated and dangerous, but they made it work, and Nurse Avery's operation was successful after her appendix had burst. It wasn't the only good news for Avery, either, as she revealed early on the episode that she got the scholarship to get her MD.

Nurse Avery, though, wasn't the only medical emergency in Thursday's episode of Doctor Odyssey season 1. Ironically, episode 4's wellness week brought a surge of sick people on The Odyssey, and the crew had to deal with various wellness practice complications that turned fatal. Amy Sedaris, Kate Berlant, Margaret Cho and Laura Harrier join the Doctor Odyssey cast for Wellness Week.

What happened during Nurse Avery's operation in Doctor Odyssey season 1 episode 4?

Nurse Avery wasn't too fond of Plastic Surgery Week in episode 3, but her excitement is obvious as The Odyssey welcomes Wellness Week. She gets to meet one of her idols, the wellness guru Agnes, played by Kate Berlant.

Avery also reveals to Dr. Max the good news that she received the scholarship to earn her MD. However, her excitement turns to pain after the Captain's dinner during the first night of the Wellness Week guests aboard the cruise ship.

Dr. Max finds Avery in her room, clutching her abdomen in pain but refusing to go to the infirmary.

She self-diagnosed herself and concluded that she had a bad case of food poisoning, blaming the raw organ meat the Wellness Week chef, Vivian (played by Laura Harrier), served at dinner. However, Dr. Max tells her that they don't self-diagnose and urges her to go to the medical bay using a wheelchair.

Soon, they find out that she has a serious case of appendicitis, and despite operations not being allowed on the ship, they have to do an emergency one because her life depends on it. But as Dr. Max and Nurse Tristan prepare for the operation, Captain Massey tells everyone to return to their cabins and brace themselves for the rough waters.

The Odyssey is in the middle of a hurricane, making things complicated for all the passengers and those at the medical bay. But, the captain and Dr. Max have a plan — Captain Massey will steer the ship in a zig-zag manner to give the doctor a few minutes of calm water to operate on Avery.

It was a challenge, as seen in Doctor Odyssey season 1 episode 4, with Dr. Max and Nurse Tristan bracing themselves and their operating gear throughout the procedure.

At one point, they have to stall the operation with Avery cut open as the captain steers the ship in the opposite direction, causing bleeding. However, Nurse Avery's operation is successful, ending with Nurse Tristan's suturing technique that he calls the "cruise ship knot."

At the end of Doctor Odyssey season 1 episode 4, Nurse Avery looks alive and well as she jokes about almost dying on the ship while playing cards with Captain Massey.

Doctor Odyssey season 1's "Wellness Week" brings a surge of ailing patients

Ironically, on Wellness Week, The Odyssey sees a surge of unwell passengers, including the week's biggest wellness and health guru, Bethany Welles (played by Amy Sedaris).

The start of the cruise was innocent enough, like a wellness retreat, with "gurus" and "enthusiasts" teaching various techniques to other wellness fanatics and health-conscious people.

Judy (played by Margaret Cho) and Agnes get the ball rolling with a special smoothie recipe with the secret ingredient — Judy's Diva Dust.

There's also another not-so-secret ingredient, which is bitter almonds. But after Agnes drinks the special concoction, it causes her liver failure. She then has to be put on dialysis to save her life.

Agnes, though, isn't the only wellness buff who needs an emergency medical procedure in Doctor Odyssey season 1 episode 4. Judy also goes under surgery after Agnes' acupuncture goes wrong. While Agnes recuperates after her dialysis, she urges Judy to get acupuncture for her own wellness. However, one of her needles goes too deep and punctures Judy's lung, causing her immense pain.

Bethany Welles, the wellness mastermind, is also at the medical bay during Doctor Odyssey season 1 after getting copper poisoning from eating too much raw organ meat.

At the end of the episode, though, Bethany takes advantage of her copper poisoning to promote another venture — B. Welles Detox — which she says is a "high-quality at-home chelation system" that can help remove toxic metals from the body.

Doctor Odyssey season 1 says goodbye to "Wellness Week" in episode 4, for good

After the hectic Wellness Week in Doctor Odyssey season 1 episode 4, Nurse Avery, who wasn't fond of the event in the first place, is happy to know that there won't be another Wellness Week in the future.

In the final scenes of episode 4 of the medical drama, as the passengers leave the luxury cruise ship, Captain Massey tells the crew that they are well and truly rid of Bethany Welles and her wellness cronies.

He tells them that he talked to Lenore, the cruise line owner's wife, about Bethany and that they are not renewing their contract with her anymore. He implied that Lenore was quick to cut off Bethany because she had broken out in hives while using one of Bethany's sunless tanners.

However, while The Odyssey is saying goodbye to Wellness Week for good, Nurse Tristan finds himself a potential romance. Chef Vivian, whom Tristan has been flirting with throughout Doctor Odyssey season 1 episode 4, is joining the crew.

She will be the replacement chef after their old one's abrupt departure. Vivian also finds herself in Nurse Avery's good graces after coming clean that all the "raw meat stuff" was all Bethany's idea, not hers, and giving Avery a tasty, "cooked" soup.
