The Penguin season finale premiered on Sunday, November 10, 2024, bringing the show to an end. Titled Great or Little Thing, the eighth episode saw Colin Farrell's Oswald Cobb take on Cristin Milioti's Sofia Falcone, with the keys to ruling Gotham's underworld lying in the balance. However, the main question on everyone's mind was whether Robert Pattinson's Batman would appear in the finale.
Unfortunately, Robert Pattinson's Batman doesn't appear in The Penguin season finale. While many fans hoped for the Caped Crusader's appearance, he doesn't show up. This was previously revealed by showrunner Lauren LeFranc in an interview with SFX Magazine, where she explained why the Dark Knight won't be appearing in the show. LeFranc said:
“Matt’s films are through the lens of the Batman, so you’re high up, looking down on the city.”
She continued:
“It’s a different perspective. With Oz, you’re in the city streets. You’re in the grit and the muck and the grime. He’s looking up, wanting to claw his way to the top.”
While Batman doesn't make an appearance in the show, there is a huge tease at the end that is expected to satisfy Batman fans.
Warning: Spoilers for The Penguin season finale to follow.
The Bat Signal lights up in The Penguin season finale
While Batman doesn't show up in The Penguin season finale, the Bat Signal does light up at the end, teasing an appearance to come. The final episode sees Oswald Cobb finally win the battle for Gotham's criminal underworld. He does so by setting up Sofia Falcone for failure, making sure that she is sent back to Arkham again.
The episode ends with Oswald killing Victor Aguilar, whom he considers family, as he realizes that he can't let family make him weak. After having everything he has ever wanted, Oswald can be seen going up to his penthouse. There, he keeps his mother, Francis Cobb, who is now in a vegetative state, and dances with Eve Karlo, who is dressed up like Francis.
However, the camera pulls back to reveal Gotham's skyline, ending the series with Batman's Bat Signal shining brightly in the sky.
How does The Penguin season finale set up The Batman - Part II?
With so much having transpired in Gotham in the last few weeks, Batman will certainly want to investigate Oswald Cobb's rise to power. With The Penguin's ending effectively setting up The Batman - Part II, fans can certainly expect the Dark Knight and Oswald Cobb to have a few run-ins, similar to those in the first film.
Oswald has his hands deep into Gotham's corruption now, and with The Penguin teasing that Bella Réal is forming her own anti-corruption squad, this will likely be further explored in The Batman - Part II. Following the release of the episode, Colin Farrell confirmed his inclusion in the upcoming sequel in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
"I was told I have five or six scenes. I don’t have any hopes or any expectations. I’m really an open book, and that’s the way I get excited by s**t or not," Farrell said.
The Batman - Part II is set to release in cinemas on October 2, 2026.
